Mangaluru: 3,400 doses of Covishield vaccine received, second-dose beneficiaries to get priority

Mangaluru, May 8: Dakshina Kannada (DK) district received 3,400 doses of Covishield vaccine on Friday May 7. This is already supplied to various vaccination centers including the ones based in the city.

As many as 380 doses were supplied to Wenlock hospital. The government health centres at Moodbidri, Mulki, Ullal and Surathkal were supplied with 200, 200, 180 and 200 doses respectively. The taluk hospitals were given 500 doses each. The vaccination camp will be held from 10 am to 4 pm.

Only people who required to be injected with second dose will be given the Covishield vaccination. Those who want to take the first dose will not be administered the vaccine now.

Covaxin vaccine is still not available. It is expected to arrive after Monday May 10.

Though there was no scope for holding the vaccination camp in the taluk of Mangaluru and the district of Dakshina Kannada on Friday May 7, some centers administered the vaccines that were left over. In total 632 people received vaccination on Friday. As many as 54 people above the age of 60 received the first dose while 284 people were given the second dose. A total of 92 people in the age group of 45 to 60 received the first dose, while 130 people received the second dose.

In the district of Udupi, 18 people received the first dose of vaccine while 471 took the second dose.

    @Ajay Rebello Read the article from Gagandeep Kang immunologist at CMC Vellore, in print.in Covaxin can be taken after weeks or months of delay in second dose.

    People above 45 were eligible for vaccine only from April 1st. By third week of April stock went low . My mother who is a senior citizen was supposed to take her second dose last week of April has still not received it. So stop blabbering sh*t and open your eyes to see the reality. This is nothing but poor planning by the incapable gvt. How can you make stupid comments like there was no demand hence they reduced production and all that when there was no second dose available for senior citizens itself and a majority of population of 18- 45 is yet to be vaccinated?

    There are a lot of comments about everything going smoothly on CoWIN app let me please inform those interested that all registration including my parents and my self being above 45 was done after their first dose in March itself and mine in April but all that has been wiped out after govt changed rules effective may 1st and i had to re-register and my parents have got waiting numbers 1624 and 1625 and no mention of my waiting number. I got the numbers from largest Covid vaccination center in Udupi on their computer since CoWIN app does not show this. Today's vaccination is being done at St Cecili premises and morning when i went there they said we will be contacted on RMN so I'm waiting.

    by the way many not mentioning (even media) or conveniently forgetting that some section of the society still hesitating to get vaccinated (same like earlier for polio )on religious feeling.. also the way people queing for liquors in wineshop, if shown same interest to get vaccine by now all 45 above age vaccinated,.. First no interest, then opposition parties & ndtv channels fake reports on indias Covaxin..less demand, less production, hesitation..all these contributed to present situation..

    Ranga. Those weren't fake reports. There's a procedure that needs to be followed. When the government approved covaxin, third phase results weren't available. The trial data has to be published in a scientific journal first in public domain and has to be peer reviewed by various scientists and researchers. This wasn't done. It's a vaccine. Not coronil.

    @Dev .It seems you have done a lot of research on the side effects of vaccines, which I appreciate. I agree the big pharma in US (and other countries) are into many unethical practices. I have been to US and observed with my own eyes that "research" is mainly done in the basements of hospitals on computers!! Only some research is genuine. Most of the important events in medicine were due to keen observation rather than research.There is a lot of money involved in Big Pharma.Remember Thalidomide - which gave side effects in the next generation (phocomelia)after being certified safe in the Western countries, remember Coxibs which were again certified safe but later banned. In my opinion Covaxin is manufactured in a time tested way ,so it should be safe ( only time can tell).

    @ Ajay I had mentioned few days earlier that I had written to the admin of Cowin website to include which vaccine is available where, Covishield or Covaxin,free or paid, if paid the price, a 4 digit code of confirmation of slot,age group.It is all implemented as you can see on the website. If there is a delay of up to 6 months there is no need to worry, on the contrary you get more antibodies according to Lancet a reputed medical journal. I expect small amounts of Covaxin doses to come in the next few days and large umbers by June end. Priority will be given to second dose people in both the vaccines above 45 age. Hope this helps.

    On what medical basis are you saying waiting for six months is alright for second dose of covaxin because last few days all i have been doing is searching for medical information on second dose and the only thing i found is that UK govt saying it's OK to take covishield upto 12 weeks for second dose but Indian govt has said that there is no evidence to extend covishield second dose beyond 8 weeks will provide immunity also NO mention about covaxin.

    I don't know whether to laugh or cry. My elderly parents got first dose of covaxin on 10th June now 8 weeks later the risk of going to vaccination center and waiting for hours is far more than any benefit they might get from such a delayed doze atleast covaxin could have taken now as there is research showing it is effective upto 12 weeks.

    You raise question yourself..and simultaneously answering the doubt by yourself. Hope now it is clear to you. How many time we requested you to register your parents in app..things will move smoothly..when you reach the spot. Show your registration at covid centre. Will give preferance and arrange vaccine in advance.

    Mr Ajay if you go after registration there is no wait time. Even I had taken vaccine in a govt phc. Register in the app and go rush is for those who come to the center and register. For 2nd dose it'll be faster I feel because your parents have already been registered
