Badal Urges PM to Ensure Safety of Sikhs in Kashmir

Chandigarh, Aug 6 (IANS): Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday sought the personal intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for ensuring the safety of Sikhs in Kashmir in the wake of the ongoing unrest and turmoil in the valley.

"Badal has written a letter to PM and apprised him about the gravity of the situation in the valley. He has also sent a copy of the resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir Gurudwara Parbandhak Board," a state government spokesperson said here.

"Badal has impressed upon the PM to provide complete security cover to the Sikh community through central security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir so that people of this community stay back and do not leave the valley."

The spokesperson said Badal also mentioned about the ongoing situation in the valley and assaults on Sikh youths and religious symbols. There have been incidents of pelting of stones on the residences of Sikhs.

"The Sikh community in the valley which believes in peace, tranquility and harmony is now feeling unsafe on account of these unfortunate incidents. The Sikh community has always stood like a rock against all odds and maintained the social fabric during the peak period of militancy," the letter said.
