10 pm to 5 am curfew in eight districts including Mangaluru, Udupi from Apr 10

Bengaluru, Apr 8 (IANS): Night curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. would be imposed between April 10-20 in Bengaluru and 7 cities across Karnataka to contain the Covid pandemic, which is seeing a resurgence, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said on Thursday.

"In view of surging Covid-19 cases in the state, corona night curfew will be imposed in Bengaluru, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Mangaluru, Manipal, Mysuru, Tumakuru and Udupi cities from April 10-20 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.," Yediyurappa said after the virtual meeting of all Chief Ministers with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Covid situation.

Essential services will, however, be allowed during the night curfew.

Admitting that cases were rising in Bengaluru and six other districts across the state, he said the fatality rate, however, remained low (below 0.5 per cent).

According to the state health bulletin, positivity rate was 6.04 per cent and case fatality rate 0.54 per cent across the state on Wednesday.

Apprising Modi of the Covid situation in Karnataka, Yediyuyappa said more cases (4,422) were reported in Bengaluru and six districts across the state, including 240 in Kalaburagi, 216 in Mysuru, 183 in Tumakuru, 145 in Dakshina Kannada, 142 in Uttara Kannada, 129 in Bidar and 126 in Ballari.

"The Prime Minister stressed upon enhancing testing and advised the state to focus on micro-containment zones, ensure ambulances, oxygen supply and ventilators," said Yediyurappa.

"Modi advised us to intensify vaccine drive from April 11-14 and launch awareness campaign for Covid appropriate behaviour by all citizens, with the help of celebrities and opinion makers, with special focus on youth," he said.

The state government has already banned large gatherings and congregations in public areas, including places of worship, fairs and during festivals.

"Vaccination drive has been stepped up with 6,000 centres across the state. Till April 5, 53 lakh people have received the jab, covering 22.31 per cent of the targeted population above 45 years of age," asserted Yediyurappa.

In view of the surge in cases, the state health department has doubled testing to 1.2 lakh per day, with 95 per cent of them through the RT-PCR method.

"We have also ramped up general beds, oxygenated beds and intensive care units (ICUs)," said the Chief Minister.

There are 42,000 general beds, 30,000 oxygenated beds, 3,000 ICUs and 2,900 beds with ventilators in state-run hospitals across the state.

"As cooperation is must with responsible behaviour, I appeal to people across the state to follow the Covid-induced guidelines to contain the virus spread," reiterated Yediyurappa.

With 6,570 positive cases registered on Wednesday, the state's Covid tally shot up to 10,40,130, including 53,395 active cases.

Bengaluru reported 4,422 cases on Wednesday, taking the city's Covid-19 tally to 4,64,438, including 38,946 active cases.

The infection claimed 36 lives, including 22 in Bengaluru during the last 24 hours, taking the state's death toll to 12,767 and the city's toll to 4,740.

Of the 357 patients in the intensive care units (ICUs) across the state, 169 are in Bengaluru hospitals, 32 in Kalaburagi, 23 in Mysuru, 17 in Tumakuru, 14 in Dharwad and 13 each in Bidar and Dakshina Kannada, with the rest spread in the remaining 24 districts.

A “night curfew” is aimed at prohibiting any non-essential movement between 10pm and 5am - the intention is to break the chain of infection specially in certain areas where cases are highly observed. The concept of a night curfew is not new to India . The only purpose I can think they serve is to give a break to the police and those in allied jobs, who are in charge of enforcing Covid-19 appropriate behavior during the day. Also, if the Government does decide on a sterilization program, this will be an apt time to implement the same . Things like masking mandates, not allowing large social and political gatherings in enclosed spaces, and improving ventilation in public spaces are all effective tools to combat the pandemic. The key here is to ramp up the vaccine drive.

What can Government do if people don't understand. Even elderly people are acting childish. Before 3 days , I travelled by a local bus in Mangalore. I asked my next elderly passenger to wear mask . His reply to me was " Aw Matha Pokkade . Virus Matha Dala Ijji . Enkulu Sari Ithnda Dala Apuji , Mask padenda Seek Suru Apundu" Such DUMB person he was.

Age of smart cities and dumb people, always looking for excuses to blame someone for their problems. Pandemic is a global problem and if people do not follow necessary safeguards, they don't have right to point fingers at anyone else including the government. People who doubted the vaccine trials and efficacy data are now blaming government for lack of supply. People who opposed lockdown are blaming government for allowing public places to be clogged. We live in a world where people find fault in everyone else but themselves.

Mr Yediyarappa is day dreaming about night things.. How many People Roam on the street after 10 pm. All the drunks are already asleep at Bus shelters or front of Commercial Buildings including KSRTC front yard.I He is getting blind during the day time when City Buses are jam packed so much even the Corona Virus do not have space to enter the Buses. Because College students are standing on steps thus blocking the Virus from entering bus. So Corona Virus stands at bus stand waiting for innocent Public to grab. Migrant workers carry the bottles in hand while coming out of Bar heading towards Bus stand without Mask but with Beedies in lips. To witness this show Chief Minister should come to Mallikatta Bus stand, Kottara Bus stand, KSRTC Bus stand including Urva Chilimbi Bus stands along with His BJP MLA without MASK and then impose the Curfew. What a Joke of the day.

Curfew for cats and dogs. Corona spreads during day time when people interact and dont maintain physical distance without wearing mask. Govt must levy heavy fines on such people. Night curfew is no way to control corona spread. Makes no sense what so ever.

10pm to 5am curfew is a nudge to people without impacting their daily lives to sensitise them that corona issue still exists. It will help people realise that social distancing and precautions are still required and they should try to prevent unnecessary activities which can spread the disease. I would say it's an inception :)

Prakash: That's not a failure by government. It's we people here failed to control Corona. We don't want to wait for anything when we go out to buy to maintain social distance. If someone else is trying to maintain we see that person as awkward ways. We don't want to use sanitizer and masks. 90% people sue their masks below nose and sometimes below Chinn. So now u can say who is responsible for the increase of disease. Government can tell people it's finally we who has to control. In India always what government says the opposition people do against that. That's the way all political parties chelas work.

why "as per the suggestion of PM", why we wait for directions from centre and hail them. State leadership is not capable or is scared to act ? . Meaningless . No power is left with any person to act locally. I say act locally and curb the spread, State machinery of karnataka is more capable. Why there is no video conferencing from CM or DC of the district with local leaders to discuss and decide ?

Looks like you don't have any planned functions at your home. There are lot of functions planned after April 25 and people will have spent their life savings in planning wedding , house warming and other functions. You won't understand the pain until you are in that situation. It is easy for people like you to say don't allow functions. Do think how depressing it would be to the family. Wedding and associated functions should be allowed as those are not planned in a day. Why unecessary political rallies are done?
