New Delhi, Jul 27 (IANS): Shahbuddin Yaqoob Quraishi was Tuesday appointed by President Partibha Patil as the new Chief Election Commissioner, officials said.

Quraishi, who is currently working as one of the two election commissioners, will succeed Navin Chawla, who retires Thursday.

"The president is pleased to appoint the senior-most election commissioner as the Chief Election Commissioner," said a statement issued here.

The 63-year old Quraishi is a 1971 batch Haryana cadre IAS officer.

He has held various key positions, including working as sports secretary. He was special secretary in the health ministry, director general of National Aids Control Organisation (NACO) and director general of Doordarshan.

He was appointed election commissioner June 30, 2006.

Quraishi will assume charge with effect from Thursday, the statement said.

    Nagesh nayaqk,

You and Achutandandan are communulally blind and you have lots of against muslims. India is a secular country and shall remain so forever. If you dont like India being secular, I strongly advise you to leave Inda for good and seek asylum in a foreign country. Loving India doesnt mean you hate your own fellow Indians. Please show your spirit of patriaotism in its true color. Saffron color is not the color of patriotism and its is the color of hate and devision.

    KESHAVA PUTTUR,

Your racial slur and spewing venom @ particular community always evident.Every appointment in India for executive/constitutional post depends on thier seniority, experience and honesty.Try to come up with terms that India is secular democratic republic country which gives it's citizen equal opportunities.I suggest you better study Indian history.

Meantime I would like to congrat Mr Quraishi on being installed as CEC of India.
