Rigel Fernandes Wins American Junior Golf Tournament

Berkeley, USA, Jul 23 (Media Release): IMG Leadbetter golfer, Rigel Fernandes, shot a 2-under-par 70 to edge  Zach Botts of Tennessee by one stroke at even par 216 in the Boys Division of the Hilton Head Junior All-Star Golf tournament.  Conducted by the AJGA (American Junior Golf Association), the Hilton Head Junior All-Star is a 54-hole stroke play event held on the South Course at Berkeley Hall Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina over the last three days.

The tournament field featured 60 boys (and 17 girls) from 17 states in the United States and international golfers from the United Arab Emirates, Barbados, British Colombia and Columbia. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,761 yards.

Rigel started off on day 1 with a 1-under par 71 and found himself a shot behind fellow IMG’er Rodrigo Munoz.  On day two Rigel shot a 3-over par 75 and still found himself in striking distance going into the final day.  So day three shaped up to be interesting, as there were 10 boys within 2 shots of the leader…..Rigel fell behind early on the front 9 and was 4 shots back at one point in the day.  However, a chip in for eagle on hole #17 was enough to give him a shot lead going into the last hole and in the end was enough for his first AJGA win.

Even though this is Rigel’s first AJGA win (he was 2nd in his first AJGA and 5th in his second), it is now his 8th win in a year!  Since September of 2009 he has won 4 Hurricane Junior Golf Tour events, 2 FCWT events and 1 U.S Kids event.

Rigel is coached by Leadbetter instructor Jay Denton

I am extremely happy to see that Rigal has made it once again. I have been to Hilton Head, south Carolina and must say that the coastal town has one of the best golf courses in U.S.A. All cannot afford to play in Hilton Head as it is a very expensive proposition. I have not met Rigal even though I was in U.S.A. when he played last time. I have great regard and admiration for Rigal's Father who had taken all the trouble to come down from Dubai for our diamond wedding. One can write a book on Ivan - A SELF-MADE MAN WITH A GRIT - AN EXAMPLE TO MANY - FULLY PROVING THAT HARD WORK CAN INDEED TAKE YOU TO THE TOP.

I join several others in wishing Rigal a bright future and may he turn out to be Tiger Wood of India.

Rigal - Keep up the good work and have your dear father as THE ROLE MODEL.
