Gujarat Speaker reprimands Congress MLA over remarks on Savarkar

Gandhinagar, Mar 26 (IANS): The Speaker of the Gujarat Assembly, Rajendra Trivedi, on Thursday reprimanded Congress MLA Rutvik Makwana for dubbing right-wing ideologue Veer Savarkar as an "agent of the British".

Last week, the Congress MLA from Chotilla had said in the Assembly that "Savarkar was acting as an agent of the British for Rs 60". The remark had created quite an uproar in the House then, forcing the Speaker to ask Makwana to produce evidence supporting his claims, failing which he should apologise for his comment.

Taking up the issue again on Thursday, Trivedi informed the House that he did not agree with the evidences provided by the MLA, which were from news sites like The Wire, BBC News, and details of books by Jaywant Joglekar etc.

Trivedi also said that the documents provided by Makwana did not have any authenticity.

"Makwana is being reprimanded for his remarks. If anyone wants to make such comments in the future, they will have to take prior permission from the Speaker after producing authentic evidence," Trivedi said.
