Mumbai, Jul 22: With the arrest of five persons early on Wednesday, the Amboli police on Wednesday busted a ghee adulteration racket in Jogeshwari (west) and seized 138 kg of the spurious material from them. The ghee was being supplied to sweet marts and hotels in Virar and nearby areas, the police said.

The Amboli police had received information that ghee was being adulterated at Yadav Chawl in Jogheshwari. The accused would mix cheap and inferior ingredients in the ghee and pack it in containers, a police officer said.

The police laid a trap around the chawl. When one of the accused, Vinod Yadav (22), was about to leave in an autorickshaw, they stopped him. The police found several containers in the autorickshaw. On being questioned, Yadav told the police that he was delivering ghee to Virar.

However, the police detained Yadav along with the auto driver Banarsi. After interrogating the duo, the police raided the chawl where they found that ghee was being mixed with other materials. Three more persons were arrested from the chawl. The police said they had sent the ghee to the Food and Drug Administration for examination.
