Misleading Ads Tarnish Goa's Image: BJP

Panaji, Jul 21 (PTI) : Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday expressed concern over increasing tagging of Goa as a sex destination through misleading advertisements on websites and local newspapers.

Damodar Naik (BJP), raising the issue in Assembly during Zero Hour, referred to numerous online advertisements and print campaigns offering female escorts in Goa.

"This is maligning the state's image as a clean tourism destination."

"They enrol young girls and college students as escorts. There are phone numbers mentioned in the advertisements," he said and demanded the arrest of those behind such ads.

Chief minister Digamber Kamat, in his reply, said Crime Branch initiated inquiry into these advertisements and found that they originated from Mumbai.

Responding to accusations of police inaction by the Opposition, Kamat said a probe had been initiated by the State CID in the matter.

"There are no Goans involved in it," he asserted. Kamat said the managements of the newspapers, who published such advertisements, were summoned and questioned by the police.
