Udupi: Colorectal cancer survivorship programme, CME inaugurated at KMC

Udupi, Mar 20: The Surgical Oncology of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, under the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre on Saturday March 20 conducted a CME on Colorectal Cancers.

Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor of MAHE was the chief guest of the programme, Dr PLNG Rao pro-vice-chancellor of MAHE, Manipal was the guest of honour of the programme. Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, dean of KMC, Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, Dr Navin S Salins, coordinator of MCCCC and Dr Naveena Kumar AN, head of the department of Surgical Oncology were present in the programme.

To cater to the growing number of cancer survivors, Dr H S Ballal inaugurated the colorectal cancer survivorship programme on this occasion and said, "Kasturba Hospital is committed to providing the best of the services with no compromise on quality. Organising this kind of Continuing Medical Education Programmes will help in updating the surgeon with the latest advancement in technology and techniques.

Inaugurating the survivorship programme he said, " The Survivorship programme looks into follow up, late effects of treatment, family wellbeing and lifestyle changes of cancer patients. It is an initiative wherein cancer survivors not only come together but also involve in motivation, share experiences and support newly diagnosed cancer patients.

The guest of honour, Dr PLNG Rao said, "Colorectal cancers have become common in South Asia, due to change in lifestyle and can be found in people across all age groups. Exploring and sharing knowledge through events like this will always be helpful in making better surgeons.

"Colorectal cancers constitute the third most common cancer and has a second-highest mortality rate as per WHO data released in 2020. March being the colorectal cancer awareness month was the best time to have a CME."

The CME discussed the latest treatment practices in colorectal cancer care. It was brainstormed by 28 faculty members from six cancer centres, practising in various aspects of cancer care ranging from Cancer surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Radiology, Pathology and Palliative care. The keynote address was by Professor Dr Avanish Saklani, colorectal and robotic surgeon from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. The CME was attended by more than 150 practising doctors from Udupi, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Davanagere, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu districts.

In his overview, Dr Naveen Kumar A N said that, around 200 colorectal cancer-related surgeries have been performed by the department in the last two years. Currently, most of the colorectal cancer surgeries are performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) which provide a faster recovery to the operated patients. The department has also performed hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgeries and complex surgeries like Inter-sphincteric resections, exenterations, multi-organ resections, lung and liver resections or metastatectomy surgeries for colorectal cancers. Dr Sharath Kumar Rao welcomed the gathering and Dr Avinash Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
