Puttur, Mar 4: Two labourers died when a mound of mud fell on them while they were trying to close a chicken waste pit.

The deceased are identified as Ravi (24) and Babu (34), residents of Parkala Colony.

Babu has departed wife and two children while Ravi has left behind his wife and two children. Both were relying on their profession as coolies to eke out a living and were the only pillars of support for their families.

On March 3, land had been levelled at the spot with a backhoe for facilitating the construction of a house for the son of Kadamaje Abdullah. The 15-feet deep pit used for disposing poultry farm waste was located there. A huge pile of mud had accumulated over the pit. The labourers were standing on the concrete sheet when it suddenly broke. When the labourers went down with the slab, this pile of mud got deposited on them, thus burying them alive instantly.

Backhoe was used to bring the labourers out but by then they were no more. Fire brigade and Sampya police were involved in the rescue operation. The locals on this occasion, expressed anger at the delay in beginning rescue work. The bodies were handed over to families after post-mortem at the government hospital here.

The victims were rushed to Puttur government hospital once their bodies were recovered. However, the doctors in the hospital who examined them at 12.30 pm declared them dead.

Puttur rural police have booked Abdullah under 304 of IPC for not providing necessary precautionary measures during the work.

Very sad for the deceased 2 very young hard working labourers. Such are champions of our infrastructures development and great contributors to our economy in building Roads, Bridges and Buildings. Their families must have devastated. They should have been instructed to wear belts and ropes. Health and well being norms should be strictly implemented without compromise.

Mangalorians never care about ground level workers life . You people remember how many death occurred in these days of construction and coolie labors. You people only open your mouth when someone die in communal riots .

ray smg,Dont put fault on only mangaloreans, but in whole India it is the same.No garantie for the workers. No proper health programm. When someone dies in accident does anyone pay any thing to the family.?noone cares. Now file a case against the owner who was responsible here sent them.He should provide their costs and compansation to the family.Anyone who sees the pit can make out it was not dug properly and not had the way out if slips.May their souls rest in peace.so sad.
