Mangaluru, Mar 2: Premananda Shetty, the corporator of Mangladevi ward. was elected as the mayor and Sumangala Rao of the Kunjatbail ward as deputy mayor of of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
The election for mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee was held here on Tuesday March 2.
Premananda Shetty from BJP secured 46 votes while Anil Kumar from Congress secured 14 votes.
Sumangala Rao from BJP garnered 46 votes while Jacintha Alfred from Congress secured 14 votes. The SDPI corporators remained neutral.

MLAs Vedavyasa Kamath and Dr Bharath Y Shetty were present. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLC B M Farooq were absent. Two SDPI corporators remained neutral.
Election officer Prakash, additional deputy commissioner M J Roopa and MCC deputy commissioner Santhosh conducted the election.
The term of the office of mayor and the deputy mayor is one year.
The MCC has a total of 60 wards. The BJP has 44 corporators whereas the opposition Congress has 14. Two corporators are from SDPI.
MLA Vedavyasa Kamath said, “Premananda Shetty who worked for RSS in his initial days, then worked for BJP. He is also a five-time corporator and an experienced leader. His experience will be handy for the overall development of Mangaluru. He has a huge responsibility on his shoulders now. I congratulate him on becoming the mayor. I urge him to carry forward the development works under various projects and implement them effectively.
MLA Dr Bharath Y Shetty said, “The outgoing mayor and deputy mayor have done a tremendous job in their tenure tackling Covid pandemic and facing all the challenges. At the age of 26, Premananda entered politics. He shares good bonding with every leader and also has good technical knowledge. As a mayor, he has a lot of responsibilities including implementation of several development works in the city.”
Premananda Shetty said, “Under the guidance of the MP and MLAs, development works of Mangaluru will be prioritized. We will work as a team and implement plans as mentioned in the manifesto. Even the Smart City works will be implemented effectively and see that it is completed within the time limit.”
