Mangaluru: ‘Cat-chy’ rescue operation - Cat stuck for two days on coconut tree rescued

Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 2: In a heart-wrenching incident, a group of kind people, rescued a cat which was stuck on a coconut tree for two days.

The cat was stuck on a 50-foot high coconut tree at the yard of Ivy and Neville Pereira at Shivbagh New Road, Kadri, for two days from February 26 late in the night. The cat was heard continuously crying for help.

Unable to bear its cries for help, the Pereira couple tried contacting many people to get someone who could climb the tree. They even tried to contact the animal care agencies. Former MLA J R Lobo’s wife, Philomena Lobo too, got involved. But every effort seemed futile, until an expert in climbing trees, Durga Das, fondly known as Durga, from Kuntikan, readily agreed to venture out, hearing the fate of the cat despite it being a Sunday.

Soon many neighbours too got involved. A net was held by five people under the coconut tree. Another neighbour, Bhavya got ready to record the event.

Durga climbed the tree with a bag, rope and a baton to handle any eventuality. Catching the cat seemed impossible and on his suggestion, the net underneath was adjusted. He managed to get the cat to the right spot and pushed it very skilfully out of the tree and the cat was flung into the net below.

As soon as the cat fell into the net, it managed to free itself by jumping out of the net and ran for its life, not to be seen again.

The neighbourhood felicitated Durga who was the hero of the daring rescue operation. Suresh Adiga couple, Viraj couple, Govinda and Bhavya, the lady who did an excellent job in recording the whole event were also thanked.

Neville and Ivy wonderful gesture. Full appreciation to all the people who have been locally vocal and the sympathizers worldwide. One thing is proved that a cat has at least more than one life (if not nine) !

Such experts/profession may disappear totally in due course of time. Tough job indeed. In Kerala some monkeys are trained to pluck the coconuts !
