Udupi, Feb 27: Girish Anchan, Bannaje ward’s Savita Harish Ram, Sunder Kalmadi and Viajaya Kodavoor objected to the proposal of municipal council president Sumitra Nayak to announce Udupi as open defecation free city. They said that migrant workers living illegally in sheds go to open places for defecation as they do not have toilets in their sheds. Sumitra Nayak assured them of constructing public toilets for them.

Girish Anchan, Kunjibettu ward councillor raised the problems of parking. He said that builders are constructing buildings without provision for parking. “Footpaths have vanished and petty shops have appeared at parking places. The municipal council should consider it seriously,” he said.

The members raised the menace of stray dogs and wastewater at Indrani that is not solved for the last twelve years. “People in the past were drinking Indrani water as holy. But the wells nearby are contaminated due to the UGD issue now,” said councillor Vijaya Kodavoor.

Kalmadi councillor Sundarya said that nearly 30 houses do not have toilets. “They have given outlet connections directly to the drains. It should be stopped immediately.”

The members urged the president to stop spending for the entire Republic Day programme.

Kinnimulki ward’s Amritha Krishnamurthi confronted commissioner Uday Kumar that another well is dug next to the existing well at Kinnimulki ward. When the commissioner explained that the well was dug by the tourism department for the new Butterfly park of Ajjarkad’s Bhujang Park, the members asked if the approval should have been given when they are already facing scarcity of water.

Municipal council vice president Laxmi Manju Kola was present.
