Mangaluru: Konkan railway electrification to be completed by June

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 25: The electric engines from the direction of Kerala which hitherto were able to move only till the city (central) station, will soon be able to move beyond, on the Konkan railway line. This is because the 400 km electrification work undertaken by Konkan Railway at an investment of Rs 1,000 crore is expected to be completed by the end of June this year.

Electrification from Thokoor to Bijoor had been completed in 2019. Now, the works are almost completed till Karwar but for some minor works. By the end of March, work up to Karwar will be complete.

The officials noted that 105 km electrification between Thokoor and railway electrification had been completed and inspected by the safety commissioner in 2019. The officials said that once the work up to Karwar is finished, the safety commissioner will be requested to conduct an inspection. Thokoor is located at the point whether southern railway and Konkan railway lines meet.

The introduction of electric loco results in savings to the government in the form of fuel cost. 1,500 litres of diesel would be required for the trains to cover a distance of 300 km and goods trains demand more. Not only that, even the time required for filling diesel at Mangaluru central station will be saved. At present, the trains coming from southern railway have to shift to diesel loco at the city central station.

At the same time, the construction of substations is on. Nine substations are in different stages. The regional manager of Konkan Railway, B Nigam, expects the Konkan Railway total electrification to be completed by the end of June this year.

Currently travelling in second class sleeper coaches in Konkan railway is a huge health hazard as the smoke from Diesel locomotives fill the coaches when the train passes through long tunnels. With electric locomotives travelling by second class sleeper would not cause any health hazard. Rightly Konkan railway prioratized electrification

Of course doubling of track is the need of the hour but it is Herculean task for Konkan railways. Since construction of many bridges, tunnels and acquiring land are not so easy in this geographical area in comparison to rest of the country. Still hope that by part by part they may take up the work.

Great! Govt should also urgently construct double lines, to cater to the people's specially of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and rest of Indian tourists. It will save lot of time, cost of transportation, crude oil and reduce pollution. This sector will always have goods traffic and regular commuters to achieve quick break even. Tourism and ancillary Industry will also flourish, beneficial to people and Govt.

If the electrification was undertaken in a faster pace in the past it would have brought down diesel consumption. If solar, alternate energy and electrification across India... uninterrupted power supply will all reduce diesel and petrol import. So much noise about fuel prices going up due to tax mop up by state and central. Only in the last few years railway electrification speed has picked up. Visionless govt in the past has hindered Indias growth.

Instead of doubling the single Konkan railway line which would have tremendously decreased travel time. They are doing electrification of existing single track at the cost of more than thousand crores of rupees which will not reduce travel time. Surely way of kick back.

Doubling of tracks should have been done first and later electrification for both lines could be done simultaneously at lesser cost.
