Udupi, Feb 25: "The district of Udupi is not free from the scare of second wave of Covid. However, it is under control at the moment. We are giving more attention to people arriving from Maharashtra and Kerala. There is need to take more precautions," said district health and family welfare officer Dr Sudhir Chandra Sooda.

Dr Sooda was speaking at the press club of the city on Wednesday February 24 in an interactive session. He further said, "We have lot of experience after the detection of first Covid case in the district. We are satisfied with the service we have given to the people in spite of the pressure of pandemic. Because of the cooperation and support of personnel, programme officers of the department the service to people became easier.



"The positivity of the district is 6.5%. So far 189 people have died. On the whole it is 0.81%. So far 23,557 people have recovered from coronavirus in the district. The percentage of recovery is 98.94%. Now there are 63 active cases. Out of this 49 people are in home isolation and 14 are getting treated at various hospitals. Out of the 14 getting treated in the hospitals, four are in ICU and rest 10 are in wards.

"There is a possibility of senior citizens getting vaccination from the month of March. Vaccination is not completed yet. However, most of the people have registered themselves on the health department portal. We are creating awareness among the health department personnel, who have not taken the vaccination so far.

"When we look at the number of deaths due to coronavirus, most of the victims are above 50 years of age. So from first week of March, there is a possibility of injecting Covishield vaccine to senior citizens above the age of 60.

"Covid vaccination is being given from January 16 of this year in the first phase to health workers, including doctors. So far out of 23,889 people, 17,339 (72.6%) have got themselves vaccinated. So far 7,287 people have got the second dose. In the second phase frontline warriors are being vaccinated. Out of 4,283 frontline warriors, 65.9% have got vaccinated so far.

"Out of the 189 people died due to coronavirus in the district, 138 are men and 51 are women. Out of the victims 38% are between the age of 11 to 60 years of age and 62% are above 60 years of age.

"Taluk-wise numbers of victims are Udupi-61, Karkala-33, Brahmavar-27, Kundapur-26, Kaup-19, Byndoor-18 and Hebri-3. In addition, one each of Davanagere and Uttara Kannada district are included in the victims' list.

"If we see age-wise 19 people above the age of 80, 38 people aged 80 years, 59 people in the age group of 61 to 70, 38 people in the age group of 51 to 60, 24 people in the age group of 41 to 50, seven people in the age group of 31 to 40 and two each in the age group of 21 to 30 and 11 to 20 have died so far.

"Many necessary personnel are deployed after the coronavirus pandemic started. ICU ventilators are also increased. 18 posts are to be filled in the ANM section. There are many vacancies in group D also. Whatever be the case, coronavirus-infected people should not get anxious. They should be positive and should be careful,” he said.

    Then why did they start schools now for kids.. students from 6th standard are attending schools.. why .. .just to snatch fees from parents... why are parents sending them to school when the risk of corona still exists...
