Mumbai: Maiden Show of Kannada Adaptation of Konkani Play Nandadeepa Held

Mumbai, May 30: The first-ever staging of ‘Nandadeepa’ a Konkani family drama that has entered Limca Book of Records, in Kannada was held at M Visveswaraiah auditorium of Karnataka Sangha, Mumbai here on Friday May 28.

Bank of India executive director M Narendra Suratkal inaugurated the event jointly organized by Karnataka Sangha, Mumbai and Kannada Kalkendra, Mumbai.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Narendra said that how the work of translation needs to be accurate, in a play adapted to stage has its own special feature different from the original, he said. He hoped that the play goes on to unite youth and becomes medium to promote love for languages.

Kalakendra president B Balachandra Rao delivered the introductory address. Gajanana Yani was the guest of honour.

He said many talent do not see the light of the day. If at all talent is given an opportunity, they wither sans any encouragement and difficulties faced to eke a livelihood, he added.

Karnataka Sangha, Mumbai vice-president Bharatkumar compered the programme. The translator of the play, Kamalaksha Saraf briefed about the play.

The play was held under the direction of Shenoy. Kusuma Balla, Sudha Shetty, Usha Bhat, Shilpa Kotian, Anandaraya Kini, Ashok Pakkala, Suresh Shetty Ampar, Jagdish Rai, Ravindra Pai, V V Pai, Shantaram Mahale and Harish Kumar Shetty among others acted in the play. Anant Ammembala was the music composer, Pradeep Rangnekar was in-charge of visuals and stage settings were offered by Shantaram Mahale. Kusuma Ballal, Nepatya Prerna Shetty and Shailesh Shetty provided the costumes and were nake-up artistes.

Social worker and banker N N Paul, thestre person Narayan Shetty Nandalike, original Konkani play author Dr Chandrashekar Shenoy, kalakendra honorary secretary B V Rao, patrons of art, S K Sundar, B S Kurkal, Omdas Kanangar, U Narasimha Kini, Arusha N Shetty, Padmanabha Sasihitlu, litterateur V G Nayak, advocate Subhash B Shetty and assistant superintendent of police Susheela Shetty were present.
