Halappa Sex Scam : Yeddyurappa Orders CID Probe

CID to probe Karnataka ex-minister for rape charges

Bangalore, May 3 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa Monday said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will probe the rape charges against Haratalu Halappa, who quit as food and civil supplies minister Sunday after media reports about the alleged incident.

"I have decided to order a CID inquiry. Let the truth come out," Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

The opposition Congress asserted that only a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will bring out the truth and took out rallies at several places in the state.

Hundreds of Congress workers staged a sit-in at Mahatma Gandhi statue in Bangalore city centre demanding immediate arrest of Halappa, resignation of the Yeddyurappa ministry and handing over of the case to CBI.

Congress workers took out rallies at Mysore, Shimoga - where the alleged rape took place - Gulbarga in north Karnataka and other places in support of the party's demand.

Dismissing the Congress demand, Yeddyurappa said the party was indulging in "politics of revenge".

"What is it they want? Halappa has resigned. I have ordered a CID probe. Let the truth come out and the guilty will be punished," said the chief minister, who has made Shimoga his political home.

Leader of opposition in the assembly Siddaramaiah criticised Yeddyurappa for "giving a clean chit" to Halappa and said: "How can the police act against Halappa?".

Yeddyurappa, accepting Halappa's resignation, said the allegations were a "conspriacy against Halappa and the government". He termed Halappa a "satvik" (good or pure person).

After Yeddyurappa announced the CID probe, Home Minister V.S. Acharya said police would take action against Halappa as per law.

"We will not pre-empt, not prompt nor sidetrack the issue," he told reporters.

Halappa resigned Sunday morning following a report in a leading Kannada daily about the sexual assault by "a minister close to Yeddyurappa" against his friend's wife in Shimoga. The daily did not name him or mention when the incident took place.

Late Sunday, the woman, Chandravathy, 33, wife of Venkatesh Murthy of Shimoga, about 270 km from here, met the state police chief Ajay Kumar Singh, and gave a 12-page complaint detailing the incident that happened on the night of Nov 26, 2009.

A case was later registered at the High Grounds Police station in Bangalore's central business district.

Murthy, a friend of Halappa and a financier, told reporters outside the DGP's office late Sunday that he did not file the complaint at Shimoga as he was not sure the local police would have entertained it had the incident not been reported in the media and also because Halappa and Yeddyurappa hail from the same town.

Murthy said he decided to lodge the complaint now as Halappa and his henchmen have begun to threaten him that his two children will face consequences if clippings of the alleged incident captured by him on his cell phone were not destroyed.

Murthy released the clippings to several TV channels in Bangalore late Sunday. In one of the clippings Halappa is shown with Murthy's wife behind him. In another, the wife is shown crying and telling her husband in Kannada "Halappa raped me".

If halappa is guilty then he must be punished as per the law of the land.

Can anyone believe, that CID under BJP regime make any sincere effort to bring the truth out, they would rather help to manipulate the case against the couple. Almost all the evidences will definitely go missing. How in our country, people respect a cow (Go Matha) so much and don’t respect women? I urge the government to organize a brothel exclusively (not at the cost of tax payer’s money) for the elected representatives, otherwise they will not allow their friend’s wives live peacefully.

In Mumbai they allowed open brothels, (although it is not legal) only for the safety of women. All our ministers can visit these brothels (not in white) in Mumbai on a fieldtrip in coloured attire and nobody will recognise them. We have black sheep in all the political parties and their aim is only corruption and pleasure of power and definitely not serving the people or development. We have to blame ourselves for this. We hesitate to go out and vote for a lesser criminal as we see only criminals during any election.

Cool down mr. ISMAIL K PERINJE. It is not the party problem when it comes to sexual issue. It is common in all parties (few such people are there in every party). JH Patel was well known such person. He had weakness to Henda & Hennu. Did anyone talk against that? N D Thivari (80 years guy) had group encounters at his service house. Did your congress govt took any action against him? Kashmir sex scandle happend, was there any action taken till today? Atleast our CM has ordered CID probe into Halappa's incident. Lets wait for the report.

Good feast for congressmen, who are jobless.Congress pranks started all around kannadanadu.Congress just cannot withstand other parties ruling, when they have done nothing for India after 60 years of Great Independence with their corrupt rules & policies.

As far has Hartalu Halappa is concerned,he should be taken nude on the streets of shimoga, showing no mercy.

Any party is like a family. Some say that Mr.Yediyurappa should resign. What kind of demand is this????? Especially congressmen do not want to witness the good things he is been doing for the developement of karnataka. There will be evil acts all around the world. We all are humans and such things happen due to ignorance and sometimes a game to step one down.If one among the family commits crime ,it is not necessary that the whole family should face the punishment. Its great that the family members have ase already decideed to look into the matter.

A mobile phone video....wonder who took it and makes one wonder if it was all enacted for the benefit of making a recording and creating a scandal. Doubt if there really was a rape especially since the people making the charges are themselves of doubtable character!!

An assault on a women is an unforgivable crime but what can be worse than a sexual assault on a friend's wife. The Government is judged by The kind of ministers that it has. I am glad that this nasty act has drawn the attention of the people all over the world and rightly the concerned minister has laid down his office. Now the opposition is demanding the resignation of The Chief Minister. In this context The Honorable Railway Minister Shastri laid down his office several decades ago when there was a serious accident and several people died and that INDEED MADE HISTORY.

It is not a shame to resign and on the contrary people will be all praise to The chief Minister if he gives up his portfolio and makes history.

What CM says is otherwise! He gave clean chit to HALAADA HALAPPA inspite of strong cirmstancial evedence and matrial proofs. What we can expect from State govt.Verdict already have given by CM then any police officer of the state dare to investigate this case on its merit?????? Thousand dollar question!!!Therefore to come clean it is good for BJP and CM alike "CBI ENQUERY IS APPROPRIATE&NEED OF THE HOUR"

It is clear that the couple is not lying as they are specific about the date of the rape, the night the alleged minister spent in their house. If they wanted to lye they would not have given six months old date. They have also saved some cloths (as per TOI) of that date which could provide vital evidence. However they should handover only half part of the cloths, because case of missing such evidence is imminent as alleged minister’s party is in power.
