Mangalore, May 3: On Sunday May 2, Norbert D’Souza, a tailor and cycling enthusiast, became the proud owner of the first ever ‘Trek Madone 5.2’ imported 24-gear trek bicycle in the city, costing Rs 2.3 lac. The bicycle, manufactured at Waterloo, Winsconsin, USA, was delivered to Norbert through the local dealers, Jyothi Cycle Company.

Norbert D’Souza, a tailor at Kaibattal in Kadri in the city, has got the bicycle by placing the order with Jyothi Cycle Company. A mechanic was deputed from Mumbai especially for fitting the parts together in the city. This six-kg trek cycle, exterior of which is made by using black carbon, moves through a system of gears, which go on changing as the cyclist pushes switch provided on the handle bar. This cycle can be carried easily by removing its wheels and handle bar, and then folding them together, within minutes.

Norbert, 58, third of the nine children of his father, who also was a tailor by profession, had a passion for cycling even during his student days. He had earned a name for himself by cycling his way to Mysore, Bangalore and New Delhi during his youth. He reached New Delhi from Mangalore by using ordinary bicycle within 11 days and returned by the same route. In 1974, he emerged as the national champion, but lost the opportunity to represent the country in Asian Games because he did not have funds and the bicycle of international standard. In 1978, he suffered compounded fracture in his right leg and could not pedal for 30 long years thereafter. After recovering through a regime of exercises over the years, in the recent past, he bought a Chinese-made bicycle costing Rs 6,000, and started pedaling his way. Norbert is confident that in the next two years, he will emerge a cyclist of national repute.

The cycle was handed over to him by Vishwanath Kamath, president of APMC Traders Association, in the presence of Badinath Nayak and Gopinath Nayak of Jyothi Cycle Company and entrepreneur, Manikkara Gopalakrishna Shanbhogue, who participated as guest. Norbert is sure to become an inspiration not only to the cyclists from the district, but also to those who feel like having been drained of all energy before reaching 60, the age at which one acquires the status of a senior citizen, and normally suffers from different diseases already acquired by him.

Congratulations to former Cycling Champion Norbert D'Souza on acquiring First Trek Cycle. Your efforts in personal success will surely be an example to the younger generation.

I do not know whether you still remember me but I am an old acquaintance of your brother, Austin Prabhu and sister Dorothy during those old CYM days and other brothers Melville, Felix and sister Leonilla and Ligoury. And also my father told me that your father was my father’s classmate!

One more thing, the souvenir of your drama ‘Bokrya Vesaso Bolpho’ written and directed by you (which was staged in Don Bosco Hall) has still been preserved by me where I had provided music for the drama and later a get together had been organized by you in your ‘GAULROSE’ house some 30 years back.

Wish you good luck and health always.

I remeber him very much when i was a student of Nantoor St.Josephs School. We fondly used to call him NOBBY D'SOUZA!! I remember the story of his journey of India in a bicycle wherein A Giant PYTHON crossed over his body when he was sleeping under the tree in one of the forest area!! He felt as if a someone was giving him a COLD MASSAGE!!!!. Good luck to you as well as highly talented brothers including Austin Prabhu!!

Surprised to know that you still have the passion for cycling at this age. Bravo! Keep it up. Still remember your journey to Delhi and if not mistaken, you either met the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi or perhaps wanted to meet her when you completed the cylcing task from Mangalore to Delhi with your ordinary cycle. You are great and hats off to you Nobby. Just remember that there are still some friends of yours who know your milestones. God is great!!

Congratulations my brother, you did it again by yourself - using your own hard earned money and not asking for any donations from your brothers and sisters in the US! Bravo and wish you all the best in your dreams in life.

Dear Roshan/Anil Mangalore, Roshan shetty's gesture is 100% correct because we Farouk/Richard /Ramesh/Ravi) went for cycling to Goa during college vacation days(1987) and it took 3days to reach and simply imagine to Delhi that is also on cycle...dont discard logical opinions..just try cycling for short distance and feel the truth!!!

Congratulations Nobby on acquiring the first ever trek Madone 5.2 imported 24-gear trek byke. I still remember your young days when u were struggling to cope with your ambition, breaking all records at Taluk, District , State level etc People won’t believe now what you had achieved, but am a witness to this. Being your classmate and friend I always remember the post card you had mailed me from New Delhi on your record breaking journey on an ordinary bicycle..

We labeled you as crazy and am proud today that you have managed to fulfill your childhood vision of owning the Bicycle of your dreams with flame still burning. Though you didn’t receive the laurels and recognition you rightly deserved for your outstanding achievements (which people have forgotten) but we hope your determination may be a guiding light to the present generation. Wish you good luck and health always.
