I feel SAHEB is the name given by Tulu speakers to Urdu speaking Muslims and like wise BEARRY to the Malayalam speaking Muslims.

What is the problem in having community get together's. It is good and can be a good source of support in foreign land.

    Best of Luck...

Thanks saleem abudhabi, for your simple and clear clarification. Sahebs (as called in Mangalore city and surrounding areas) or Turks have a distinct culture/lifestyle than their biyari counterparts.

    Saleem/Abu Dhabi,

You are in the world of illusions. Do you think hanafi or urdu speaking muslims are superior to malayalee or konkani speaking shafis? Nay. not at all. Allah says in Quran. " I have created from male and female and made you in groups and tribes so that you know each other, Verily he is close to Allah one has most taqwa (piety). In the light of this ayath, please dont take false pride in being hanafi. My parents are hanafis, but I am a muslim. I dont call myself hanafi. Sahiba in arabic means female friend and it is imported from arabic into urdu. Lets not devide the muslim society in caste lines like hanafi/shafi etc. All are ummah of our beloved prophet and servant of Allah. No body is superior except for his piety and good deeds. Thats the simple message of Quran

I am least bothered what "Sahiban" refers to. What delighted me is that some Mangalorean Muslim sisters are getting united in a Social gathering. It is a healthy development. I hope these Saahibaan sisters will not limit thier unity only to cultural events and raffle prizes but will work for the benifit of the community in eductional, social and religious field as well.

Saheban is actual plural of Saheb as are Urdu speaking Muslims called in Dakshina Kannada. Sahiba is reffered to females. Saheban or Sahaban are Urdu speaking Muslims whereas Byaris are a version of Malayam mixed with Tulu/Kannada speaking Muslims from Dakshina Kannada thats all.Its only the language and few local customs nothing change in following Islam.

Mr.Inayathulla AK Jafer, Hanafi or urdu speakers of Mangalore. I do not think that the language spoken by the hanafis of Mangalore is urdu.

There is no word like NAMME, MANJE, NAKKOSO, etc., in urdu. May be I am wrong.

Dear readers. Thank you for seeking clarifications. Sahaban in urdu means plural of sahiba. Sahiba means female friend and sahabaan means female friends. Here it is referred as muslim female friends, not hanafi not shafi. just muslim friends.

What is this Saaheb community ? I am born and brought up in South kanara. Did my schooling at Mangalore. I used to hear only 2 groups in muslims of South kanara. One is byari and the second one is turkas. I am confused to hear this new community born in south kanara.

Its a good news that Hanafi's or Urdu speakers of Mangalore area are going to have a get together function and organisation.Good luck & Best Wishes. Little confusion over "Saheb" - means owner or freind and this word normally known in south canara and Kasaragod. So its better to name as DAKSHINA KANNADA HANAFI COMMUNITY(DKHC).
