Mangalore University Convocation – Did Oscar Flout Protocol?

Mangalore University Convocation – Did Oscar Flout Protocol?

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Apr 7: The convocations of universities are held as per the set procedures, where the protocol cannot be flouted. As the chancellors of the universities normally attend these functions and award degrees, discipline and sanctity of the occasion are maintained as a rule, and every care is taken to ensure that the convocation does not witness incidents which violate the procedures.

In tune with the procedures, state Governor, H R Bharadwaj’s wife, who was present at the convocation of the Mangalore University held on Tuesday April 6, sat amongst the audience. However, former union minister, Oscar Fernandes, invited his wife, Blossom Fernandes, to accompany him while accepting his honorary doctorate degree from the university chancellor. His action made one to wonder as to whether this was permitted. The Governor too surprised the audience, by crossing over and standing in front of the teapoy placed before him, for presenting the doctorate to Oscar, whereas the other doctorates were granted by him, by standing behind the teapoy, in front of his seat.

As per set procedures, no one from the audiences’ gallery can enter the dais directly. Security personnel were posted to enforce this regulation. However, Blossom entered the dais, received the doctorate in the company of her husband, got the photographs clicked, took the certificate of doctorate in her hand, and then got seated in her seat among the audience.

The university rules specify that only in the case of the handicapped persons, those who take care of them can enter the dais, with prior permission of the organizers. The dais remains off limits for all the others.

Some sources however, claim that Oscar Fernandes had obtained prior permission from the state Governor-cum-chancellor of the university, to accept his honorary doctorate degree in the company of his wife.

It's a bit surprising to see postive comments from folks actually in Udupi and Mangalore, and negative comments from people in the Midlle East!!

Is that a habit in the middle of the desert ?? OR because they went there from an unpronounceble rural place and now they have woken to add thier few bits ??

Mr.Oscar Fernandes is better deserved to get the Hon. Doctorate compared to the other persons namely Mr.R.Chenraj Jain, Mr.A.S.Vishnu Bharat and Ms. Madhura M.Chatrapathy.What is the great contribution these people have rendered to the society? The Chancellor of a publicly funded University presenting a hon .doctorate to the Chancellor of a deemed university which has been derecognized by the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, this sounds strange.

Ms.Madhura M.Chatrapathy is a woman entrepreneur having her own business interests and nothing to do with social work.Mr.A.S.Vishnu Bharat is a chartered Accountant. What is his great contribution as social service personality?

Of course Oscar brought his own wife to the dias and not any other person. there is nothing to make issue in this matter. This shows his respect to his wife. All those who oppose this should understand that all the rules and regulations are made by human beings and not the rules made human beings.
Infact I dont think any rules have been offended by Oscar in this occation. hence there is nothing to make issue.

I too hail from Udupi from Oscarji's constituency. When he was an M.P. from here, things were better. He is the only approachable leader, whom we could go to and vent our concerns. Now none of them are accessible. We want you Oscarji to contest and bring back Udupi's past glory. We are proud that a man like you, from a simple background, has fought all odds and reached the top rungs in the Congress party. Congrats for the degree. May you receive many more accolades and make us proud.

Congrats Mr. Fernandes!! You've always done your work with no pomp and show... it is time for you to be recognized and credited for the work you have done all along...  God Bless you with many years of service!! Credit also goes to his wife for being the pillar of support. Human beings are by nature jealous and like to pull others down, there's nothing we can do about it. Do whatever you feel is right and the god above will be the sole judge.

Wah Dr.Oscar !!. Yes Mr Governer was your cabinet colleague last time. But now both are Ex ministers. Suppose, if Mangalore university honors Mr.Lallu Prasad yadav with Ph.D, with refernace to his service to India he can accompany his beloved Rabri devi and battery of his son`s,daughter`s, Son in law and daughter in law and ofcourse his favorite cows (Because he loves cow and we Indians worship cow) to stage. Then look at the scene.

First of all, we all should have known n observed over the years, that Oscar attends any function as an Invitee or Guest / Chief Guest, then Blossom has always accompanied him & also has sat on the dais, whether she was invited or not.
Rules n regulations are made by people all the times and broken by the people all the times. With due respect to Oscar, Politicians in general are known to flout rules and protocols in our society. So this is nothing new.
In this case, if Blossom just accompanied Oscar to the dais to receive the degree, I guess we should not make a big issue of it.

Oscar Fernandes has made it a point to have his wife besides him wherever he is invited to attend functions. Thats the love he has for his spouse. It is good. But in University convocations there is what is called certain protocol. He could have advised her to sit amongst the audience while he received the honorary Doctorate. But then conventions are there to break is`nt it?

    @Shradha and G.N.Bangera,

Agreed the issue is trivial. But if there are rules and regulations they should be followed to the "T". For e.g. if I get a doctorate degree tomorrow can I call all my friends and family to the dais as they have supported me in my career in someway?

If Oscar wants to recognize his wife`s support he has other avenues to do that. Well the first question is, does he really deserve the doctorate??

For Oscar ‘photo-call’ seems better and more valued than protocol. With due respect to the norms and regulations, I wonder whether rules and regulations are made for human beings or humans beings are made for rules and regulations. Why can’t flexibility be awarded to certain cases? In present scenario protocol seems to be more suited for robots and machines.

Humans beings are programmed machine that can and should automatically follow the set path. Spontaneity is our great asset and when it combines with flexibility, life becomes creative. Protocol for security might hold good but in other cases, we perhaps need to do something else than circling around this ‘appa nettida aalada mara’.

This was something perhaps Jairam Ramesh wanted to state the other day during the convocation but in his haste and over enthusiasm he gave religious aspect to it. It is not that we should follow decorum or ride a trodden path but what is important is being flexible, sensible and adjustable. True every occasion has its own solemnity. But does it mean, the decorum and protocol take precedence over humans?

Sabbath was created for man and man was not created for Sabbath needs to be our mantra, may be. Oscar has been ‘Blossom’ing for long. So Varsity official too knew that he will come along with Blossom and hence they did not perhaps make it an issue. So the question is now who is actually worried about the protocol. The Varsity, Oscar or the Media?
