Five Convicted in Kandhamal Riot Case

Bhubaneswar, March 31 (IANS) A fast track court in Orissa Wednesday sentenced five people to two years' imprisonment in a Kandhamal riot case.

Janala Pradhan, Krushna Pradhan, Nata Pradhan, Ashok Mallick and Udayanath Pradhan from Raikhala-Gadiapada village were accused of torching and destroying the house of Birendra Naik of the same village during the 2008 Kandhamal riots. They were booked under several charges.

The charge of torching the house could not be proved but they were convicted for mischief causing damage, unlawful assembly and rioting, P.K. Patra, the public prosecutor told IANS.

They were also fined Rs.2,500 each by Judge Chittaranjan Mohanty of the Kandhamal district fast track court.

"If they fail to pay the fine, they will have to undergo an additional two and half months of jail term," Patra said.

Kandhamal district, about 200 km from here, witnessed widespread violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram Aug 23, 2008.

More than 25,000 Christians were forced to flee their homes after their houses were attacked by rampaging mobs that held Christians responsible for Saraswati's killing, although the police blamed the Maoists.

I fully agree with Shahnawaz. Even in M'lore because of christian Hospitals, schools, colleges, orphanages many other religions have benefitted. After studying in christian institutes people have gone abroad and earn their livelihood and brought up their families for higher status in the society. One should try to know the truth and not just go blindly behind political parties nor religious fanatics those who misguide people for their selfish reasons/agendas. Always encourage those who are doing good to the society so that country will grow allround.

Police blamed Maoists, but fundamentalists insisted it is Christians. These fundamentalists would go to any extent in fabricating stories and malicious proaganda against other communities to attack and kill. Christians are very peaceful community in India. They are more into community service and social upliftment. They have selfless institutions that serve humanity. One can find schools, play groups, hospitals, old age homes, orphanages in remote parts of India. They are kind and loving. Their love, care and sacrfice voluntarily calls for coversion of less priviliged.

India has been ruled by British who wer christians nearly for 350 years until our Independence, had they wished conversion, they could have turned whole of India into a christian state as they had the military might and wealth. But they didnt. The story the sangh parivar circulates with regard to Kandamal violence is far from truth and purely fabricated and ill founded. Who is more authentic- Is the administration or parivar?
The law should go heavy on the perperators and master mind of these violence. Actual culprits who are politicians and fundamentalists who are stage managing the violence are at large and only the small players are given sentence. Until and unless actual roots are not destroyed, we cant say justice is done. Get to the bottom of it, find the actual culprits, book them, try them and if found guilty hang them or behead them in public so that message travels across miles.
