17 Indians Sentenced to Death for Killing a Pakistani in UAE

DUBAI, Mar 29 (PTI) : Seventeen Indians have been sentenced to death by Sharjah's Shariah Court for killing a Pakistani man and injuring three others in a vicious attack last year.

Judge Yousuf Al Hamadi sentenced the 17 men to death after all evidence, including DNA tests, showed they had knifed the Pakistani to death, Khaleej Times reported.

The victim had died of his wounds after he was stabbed repeatedly on various parts of his body and had also suffered brain damage, police said.

The attack in January last year followed a fight over the control of the illegal liquor business in Al Sajaa area of Sharjah, one of the emirates of UAE, the paper said.

The police had said the suspects had attempted to kill three other compatriots of the victim, but they managed to escape and were rushed to Kuwaiti Hospital for treatment.

The convicted men are aged between 17 and 30 years. According to the three Pakistanis who survived, 50 people set upon them with knives on that fateful day last year.

Police had rushed to the area and arrested the 17, who had allegedly led the attack. The others were let off due to lack of evidence.

During court hearings, all the suspects confessed they had fought with and murdered the victim. Forensics reports and DNA tests also proved their role in the crime.

I think they deserver to be punished. In UAE law is very strict that is why crime is less. Lonely women can movearound whole night without fear. Why S M Krishna is involving in this murder case.

As said by Mr Langoolacharya, the Indian Consulate officials have already gained access to these 17 persons, as per Indian Consul-general Sanjay Verma. Moreover, sources say that most of them are from Punjab. The Central govt has also promised to provide the best possible legal help to them once the verdict is available in documents. So let's hope that these people will be given help and attention. However, one cannot deny that the legal system of these countries does not work like that of India. Moreover these people were tried by Sharjah which follows Shariah rule.

While it is a sad situation, in case they have indeed killed the person, they are in for realy trouble. Firstly they were in to illicit liquor business, which itself warrants highest punishment in Sharjah and secondly it is murder case which calls for capital punishment as per the prevailing legal norms of Sharia which Sharjah practices.

One need to understand thoroughly these laws and circumstances before commenting. While as Indians we do feel sad, we also need to know that these kind of things are going on but they are now swept under the carpet as it happens in India

Why do you guys bring India Pakistan politics into this and stop accusing each other because we have good and bad people in both countries. Killing a person is a crime and whoever commits a crime should be punished as per the law of the country. The law in UAE is same for every religion and nationality. If we want to live here we need to respect the law.

    Saif/Mitwa,

We dont know which religion these 17 persons belong, we dont know if they had proper defense during trial , we dont know if documents were translated in english and provided to accused.

Its a sad story, Mr SMK foreign minister directed indian embassy in UAE to give Consular access to defendants and possibly file appeal on their behalf, which is a normal process followed every where in such type of situation.

Why you guys are showing your glee?

It shows you and your community in poor light.

May be it helps Nageshmamu and his ideology, not yours....

There was a story of a Mad man talking to a mad man. Here how it goes... A brand new building was about to be inaugurated. A mad man manages to slip through the crowd and goes to the top floor and threatens to jump before the Pooja could start. All efforts to get him down was in vain. Another mad man was passing by and offered to help. The owner agreed.. The second mad man took a stick and advised the first mad man to come down or else he will saw the building with the stick and topple the building! The first mad man came down running. The moral of the story is "only a mad man can talk to another mad man". When I see the to and fro letters in reference to Nagesh Nayak or should I call "PSEUDO" Nayak, the above story comes to my mind!

For every news Mr Nagesh 'Khal'Nayak has only one view: BJP RSS, Article 370, Afzal Guru etc..One must appreciate him because over the years and across thousands of news stories, he has never changed his opinion. This also means that he has not learn anything new either. Here the 17 men convicted have accepted their crime and hence punished according to the law of the land. But coming to Afzal Guru's issue, Nagesh must be blatantly forgetting several things.

As of now Indian govt has 35 clemency petitions pending for persons who were awarded death sentence. Out of this 35, at least 26 were awarded death sentence before Afzal and he stands at 27. As per the Law of our land, till these 26 clemency applications are decided and cleared, either by rejecting or upholding the death sentence, Afzal Guru cannot be hanged. These 26 applications were pending even during NDA term. So whether BJP or Congress or any other political party has nothing to do with this issue and only our legal system has prevailed.

Going by Nagesh's version, BJP must be held responsible for not executing Afzal since BJP failed to implement the death sentence of these 26. Moreover, the entire prosecution of Afzal Guru took place between 2001 & 2004 during which NDA was ruling the country. Even if BJP comes to power, it cannot do anything till these 26 applications have been decided. So Nagesh, take a break and stick your comments to the published news and not to some vague & hypothetical happennings

Very unfortunate. Lust for illegal wealth and luxury life drives human beings to committ such evil acts and if one is satisfied with what he has, I am sure this act would not have happened. Greediness is root cause of all sorrows. Sharia courts are not biased and they study the case thoroughly and after they are 100% convinced then only they pass the judgement that too capital punishment. God said in Quran, killing an innocent soul is like killing of whole of humanity. The judge cannot be wrong and suspects are wrong, hence got punishment. If it were India, first of all justice would not have been delivered, that too wrong judgement would have come after a lapse of 30 - 40 years and there are further appeals too. I sincerely request my Indian brothers, who are guest workers in foreign country, to respect the laws of the land and abide by it. If you are peaceful and obey law of the land, then no body would touch you or else one would land in soup.
