Niqab Ban Gets Unanimous Support in Canada

By Gurmukh Singh

Toronto, Mar 28 (IANS): Canadians have unanimously supported the niqab ban announced by French-speaking Quebec province this week. After France, the Canadian province is the first in North America to ban the niqab, a top-to-toe dress worn by Muslim women.

The ban, triggered by an Egyptian immigrant woman's refusal to remove her niqab in her French classes in Montreal, will disallow access to government services, schools and colleges and health care to those who don't remove the face veil.

A national survey at the weekend showed widespread support for the ban in this highly polarized nation between liberals and conservatives. According to the survey - conducted by Angus Reid for the Montreal Gazette newspaper - 95 percent people in Quebec province supported the law to ban the Muslim dress which they say contradicts the liberal, secular values of their society.

Across Canada - which has 10 provinces and three national territories - four out of five people supported the ban.

Expressing his surprise at the near-unanimity among Canadians on the issue, Mario Canseco, vice-president of the

pollster, was quoted by the Montreal Gazette as saying, "It's very rare to get 80 per cent of Canadians to agree on something. With numbers like this, there is not going to be much of a controversy over the legislation in Quebec or anywhere else in the country."

But Salam Elmenyawi of the Muslim Council of Montreal attributed the poll results to the emotional climate surrounding the niqab issue.

"They are giving it based on their emotional response to a woman covering her face, which is understandable. It is associated with all the negative stereotypes that have been on the airwaves," the Muslim leader was quoted as saying.

Canada is home to about one million Muslims who are mostly concentrated in major cities such as Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

As Canada's demographic profile changes with immigration and higher birth rates among immigrants, the Muslim population is estimated to triple in two decades, according to a recent report by Statistics Canada.

Most Canadian Muslim women shun the niqab and hijab which are usually worn by those from most orthodox Muslim countries from the Middle East or Somalia and Ethiopia.

Dear Reema, at least people are interested in the opposite sex legally or illegally where as in Pakistan in one of the place they keep only boys for the pleasure of men which is also called sodomy's. (I do not approve illegal sex)

Consider the following statistics reported by Duke University on their website:
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 6 women in the US have experienced an attempted or completed sexual assault

-The US Department of Justice reports that a woman is raped every 90 second
Even worse is the situation in South Africa, according to UNISA, where a woman is raped every 26 seconds
When a woman practices modesty and does not display her beauty to others by donning on the hijāb, she does not attract sexual attention towards herself. Instead, she sends an immediate message to anyone who looks towards her about her dignified nature, thus closing the door that leads to evils such as flirtation, fornication, and worse. In addition, she demands recognition for her capabilities, intelligence, and skill set, rather than be a sexual object displayed on a billboard in order to advertise and sell products. It is through this modesty which a woman displays while wearing the hijāb that not only safeguards her from having her honor violated, but, in fact, raises her respect and grants her true recognition in society

    Lavin Noronha,

As I mentioned below,  The Qur’an says that Hijab has been prescribed for the women so that they are
Recognized as modest women and this will also prevent them from being  Molested.

People usually only discuss ‘Hijab’ in the context of women. However, in the Glorious Qur’an, Allah first mentions ‘Hijab’ for men before ‘Hijab’ for the  women. Which says “The moment a man looks at a woman and if any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he should lower his gaze.

United States of America is supposed to be one of the most advanced countries  of the world. It also has one of the highest rates of rape in any country in the  world. According to a FBI report, in the year 1990, every day on an average  1756 cases of rape were committed in U.S.A alone. Later another report said  that on an average everyday 1900 cases of rapes are committed in USA. The
year was not mentioned. May be it was 1992 or 1993. May be the Americans  got ‘bolder’ in the following years.

Consider a scenario where the Islamic Hijab is followed in America. Whenever  a man looks at a woman and any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his  mind, he lowers his gaze. Every woman wears the Islamic Hijab, that is the  complete body is covered except the face and the hands up to the wrist. After  this if any man commits rape he is given capital punishment. I ask you, in such  a scenario, will the rate of rape in America increase, will it remain the same, or  will it decrease?

Reema, how can you say that hijab prevents from molestation. It is the molesters intension (state of mind) be it with hijab or without hijab he will molest. Whats the logic behind hijab preventing the molestation?.

Riya, is religion greater than life itself? Religion should be the subordinate of life and not vice-versa. But with us, the problem is that our religion has become of primary importance to us. Religion is only the means and not the end. While religion is the creation of human beings, life is purely God's creation. So how come humans' creation come above God's creation? Decency is not the off-shoot of religion but it is part of life. If decency is off-shoot of religion, it should vary from religion-to-religion, since every religion has its own set of teachings.

Moreover, why frown on western culture? Superiority of culture is not decided on what we wear, how much we close and how much we expose but how far we are human. Just because homosexuality is legal or couples kiss in public, it does not mean that the culture is pervert. And just because it is not legal in our country, it does not mean it is not happening. Rather, it is more prevalent among us than others. Is sex taboo that it should not spoken about? Cultural flaws and drawbacks of any religion or country cannot be used to justify our fundamentalism and narrow-mindedness. Religious beliefs as long as they remain within oneself and family are very good and needed.

But when they cross into my neighbour's territory, are not only dangerous but unhealthy. Where religion rules the nation above the Constitution, humanity often taken backseat. Please God through our life but not at the cost of others' life & right for life!

    Reema,

If girls wear mini-skirts in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia they are not only to be teased something very serious happens. Now, it is upto you to decide whose fault it is. But those who wear head to toe, when going on vacation to France/UK/Switzerland, throw away their outer garment before getting out of the plane. This is what actually happens. Because, in these countries, men are least bothered if you are wearing a mini or a bikini. Therefore, I say its all in our upbringing. Hence, do not generalise, keep your belief to yourself - let me believe in what I do.

    Lydia Lobo,

For security purpose or for any enquiry, officers can ask Hijab women to remove face cover. Banning is just to hurt to Muslim community.

The Qur’an says that Hijab has been prescribed for the women so that they are
Recognized as modest women and this will also prevent them from being
    Molested.
Suppose two sisters who are twins, and who are equally beautiful, walk down
the street. One of them is attired in the Islamic hijab i.e. the complete body is
covered, except for the face and the hands up to the wrists. The other sister is
wearing western clothes, a mini skirt or shorts. Just around the corner there is
a hooligan or ruffian who is waiting for a catch, to tease a girl.

Whom will he tease? The girl wearing the Islamic Hijab or the girl wearing the skirt or the mini?
Naturally he will tease the girl wearing the skirt or the mini. Such dresses are an
indirect invitation to the opposite sex for teasing and molestation. The Qur’an
rightly says that Hijab prevents women from being molested.

I would agree with you Riya if those countries fell apart...But all liberal countries of the world(Belgium,Netherlands,Canada,France,Japan) are progressing well...and plus there are security issues and legal issues...without face identification, every tom dick and harry will use the niqab to do illegal work...Therefore they have banned the face covering Niqab...they are not banning the burqa.Burqa and headscarves are banned in Muslim countries like Turkey,Tunisia and that is wrong.

Same Western (personality is none other than) Michael Jackson, was roaming in Bahrain clad in a Burkha. Apart from this, we have instances of Burkha using for illegal purposes - Mumbai Gateway blast is one such evidence.

I say, keep your belief to yourself - let others keep theirs as dear to them. Let us not generalize. I commend the nations that give priority to public safety than religion.

Mr Harold D'cunha, you are talking about western culture, there is one and only one culture, that is religion culture, which teaches decency, there is no much difference between western and animal behavior ( culture) hardy they cover their body, both kiss and caress in public, same sex is legal and common, both have their own territory, nudity is legal and considered as naturist.
Progress, what progress are you talking about, any country can progress, if you make selling of this things legal, commercial sex workers , alcohol, gambling, homo and lesb….

First Nation and then religion. This motto is very much visible in Western Countries because there education pattern and outlook of society is far different. Showing one's face will not change one's modesty but it is one's mind set that requires modesty. If one wears black glass the world look black.
Any country where Nation is first will progress.
