Mangalore, Mar 11: Students of St Aloysius College, under the leadership of the institute’s humanities association, human rights cell, All India Catholic University Federation (AICUF), Al-Care, and Al-Madhayam of the college, organized a peace march to the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office in the city on Wednesday March 10.

The peace march started from the college premises and was inaugurated by Fr Sweebert D’Silva, principal of the college, by handing over the flag to the secretaries of the associations. The marchers held placards with slogans demanding peace in society.

At the end of the march, the students gathered in front of the DC’s office and conducted a programme presenting their objectives.

Sindhura Shetty, secretary, human rights cell, said that the district has been adversely affected by several incidents which have taken place in and around the city.

“Violence has become common in the city and the district and is followed by some protests and ‘bundhs’. So there is need for a peaceful society which should not prevent anyone from practicing their own customs as provided by the constitution”, she added.

Anjana Ramakrishna, Melton Peres, and others from the different associations also spoke. Student Fahila read out the memorandum which was to be presented to the DC.

Students staged a street play during the programme depicting the effects of violence and also the demand for a peaceful, harmonious, and tolerant society. The play was directed by Ganesh Kumar T K, a student of the college.

Along with office-bearers of associations, campus minister of the college Fr Francis D’Almeida, lecturers Dr Rosevera, and Dennis D’Sa were present during the handing over of the memorandum to the DC.

From what I an observe it is not just a PEACE MARCH but a march in total PEACE. It is time that demonstrations like these convey the right meaning to The Citizens of Mangalore. It is unfortunate that instead of living in PEACE with each other attempts are made by disruptive elements to LIVE IN PIECES.

It is a mixture of ll communities and religion that have joined hands to bring home THE HOME TRUTH.It is good to see the younger generation taking the initiative to conduct this excellent AWARENESS program. It is my sincere hope that the message is well received by all concerned. After all we are all children of Our Mother Soil. Let us strive to live in total peace with each other.

Congrats to Father Swebert, Father Almeida and others who have taken the initiative in the concept.

Writing is an art, Pen is mightier than the Sword. While one atracts, the other can take ones life off. The pen of Shahnawaz seems to be rolling more, which is okay butsometime oozes too much of ink creating a blob or hole on the paper.

If the society has to operate harmoniously, the peace has to prevail, hostility should end. Calling Nagesh Nayak, Attavar and Mutalik as fanatics does not create harmony. Calling someone vulture, pointing fingers to political parties etc has no meaning to harmony.

More one points to them, more publicity they gain and hence more problems. Ignorance is the best medicine for some of the acts.

War, social injustice, poor economy, inflation, racism, descremination, etc etc when takes precedence, peace starts to fade.
Religious radicalism, fanaticism are not the only factors that is inversely proporional to peace.

appreciate the good deeds of the school, students, and learn to leave peacefully ignoring any detremental factors. Good is good because there is bad. but sometime even bad tries to be good too. Personality, culture would transform too, so let us be the model in this society.

    Dear Prabhakar,

Shahnawaz has rightly said. If you read carefully his comment, he neither said BJP, BD or RSS. He just listed some names who are fanatic, whether he is from Congress (Nagesh Nayak ??), BJP, JD or any other polictical party. He also mentioned 'etc.' at the end, which means this is applicable to Bin Laden and his team.

Kudos to Shahnawz and all Indians who stand for Peace.

This is a good initiative from St Aloysius College Students for Peace in Mangalore. Recently when I had conversation with my colleague, she told that her sister got medical seat in one of the reputed college in Mangalore. But her father was not ready to send her to Mangalore because of recent incidents. (i.e. communal violence, bundh, church attack, pub attack etc). I was surprised by this but…. truth is that this is how people see Mangalore now days.

The need of the hour is to impart and imbibe the teachings of peace, love and peaceful co existance in our young minds and mould the younger generation for a peaceful tomorrow. Or else we shall have more fanatics like Nagesh nayak, attavar, muthalik etc. Good work by these young kids. Live and let live. Good upbringing with lot of values will surely change our future society.
