Bangalore: Pilikula Nisargadhama to be Named after Shivaram Karanth
Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SB)

Bangalore, Mar 5: The High Court (HC) has ordered the state government to rename Pilikula Nisargadhama in Vamanjoor of Mangalore in Dakshina Kannada district as Shivaram Karanth Nisargadhama.

The division bench headed by Justice V Gopala Gowda ordered to name the biological park after Jnanapeeeta awardee within four weeks, hearing a petition filed by Harikrishna Punaroor, former chairman, Kannada Sahitya Academy (KSA).

However, along with Pilikula Nisargadhama Society locals too have been objecting to the proposal stating that a portion of the 400-acre-park has been named after the writer and there is no need of renaming the park as there are several other monuments named after him.

This is the result wrong people occupying respectables positions. Is Mr.Punaroor a writer? What is his contribution to Kannada literature? He must have got into Kannada Sahithya Accademy by influence. What can anybody expect from such person other than politicization? What has late Mr.Karanth to do with Pilikula to be named after him. Aren't there libraries in the state of Karnataka to be nbamed after him for the contributions he has made in the field of literature? That would have been the right tribute for him.

This is rediculous on the part of all concerned in this matter. You can name a college, a library or anything to do with studies, language or literature after Dr Karanth. It should be a recognition of his contribution to literature. It is weird to name a holiday or a leisure spot like Pilikula after him. It is absolutely not relevant to the subject.

No doubt Dr. Shivaram Karanth was a great writer and poet and has made a great contribution to kannada literature. He is one of the greatest of his time. But we cannot forget so easily that he was a religious fanatic. He had published derogatory remarks about jesus christ and the holy bible. Pili Kula belongs people of all the religions and naming the place after him may not justified in the best of interest of all concerned.

While honouring High Court directions, the government has to name it SK Nisargadhama and revert back to its original name PILIKULA NISARGADHAMA to meet aspiration of local people and culture. Mr.Alex has correctly pointed out Dr.Karanth's likely disapproval of renaming such beautiful and meaningful name. Finally, what is in the name? But, there is something in the NAME. Let us respect and honour the culture of the people. Let it be PILIKULA forever.

The Pilikla nature park should not be renamed after Shivaram Karanth. With due respect to Mr.Karanth it would be better to name some literary acadamy after him. The local names should be given preference.

Though I have the highest respect for Dr Shivram Karanth, I do not understand the need to rename the Pilikula park after him. The park has been so named since this was a watering hole for tigers (Pili in Tulu) as per local folklore. Renaming the parks smacks of ignorance of local folklore and is a insult to the local people. Dr Karanth would not have approved of this imself being a great promoter of local folklore through his writings!
