Sharjah, Mar 2: Incessant rains from the past 24 hours affected Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates. But the worst affected was the cultural city of the UAE, Sharjah, which was in total disarray mainly due to the flooding of arterial roads and industrial areas.

Sharjah recorded the most rainfall of 36.2 millimeters on Saturday night, according to a forecaster at the Dubai Meteorological Office at the Dubai International Airport. The MET office had also warned that more rain would follow on Tuesday and Wednesday which was caused by a trough of low air pressure from Saudi Arabia. Although the rainfall is not torrential in nature, the lack of storm water drainage infrastructure in Sharjah has thrown the city out of gear.

The worst affected were the low lying industrial areas of Sharjah and the main shopping areas of Alwadha Street. All subways remained submerged forcing pedestrians to risk crossing the main streets in poor visibility.

Many schools in Sharjah and Dubai were closed on Tuesday. Office goers remained trapped in long traffic jams, thus not being able to reach their offices on time.

Earlier Dubai police announced the deaths of six people in 2 major accidents on bypass roads owing to poor driving conditions. For the first time the Transport authority and the Police have jointly warned the public to avoid driving until the situation improves. The Sharjah police had a tough time diverting morning rush hour traffic from submerged areas.  Many vehicles were found stranded or abandoned in chest high water.

With the MET office continuing to forecast more rain and strong winds, the woes of Sharjah residents will stay for awhile in the desert land .

Please reread the article.. The rains were a result of a low pressure belt and were NOT torrential in nature.. Floods were caused by lack of drainage facilities.. Why call it a megaflood and bring all doomsday predictions in everything? Although i agree in going green nevertheless.

These pics clearly show that humanity and nature are on a crash course to disaster. These mega floods are are a indicator that there is a convergence of crisis. Go Green. Your pictures are good.

It is very unfortunate that this part of the world people pray for rain and when it rains for a day the entire system is out of place. The country has achieved record breaking feats in various sectors , but are not equipped to handle a days of showers they should definetley work towards finding a solution to this problem.

In 2008, they had record rainfall for a century. For 2 days I had travelled submerged roads of Sharjah, including Sharjah cricket Stadium. I was thinking I was in my native place Bantwal with all the roads flooded. Fortunately while returning our Nissan car didn't stop with water almost near wind-shield, more heavier and ground clearing vehicles had stalled that day- reason is simple our driver was Indain & he knew how to drive in submerged roads, while locals just bungled. only thing is we didn't have dinner that day as we reached late to our destination.

Asking or looking for holiday will not serve any purpose. I do not why we Indian are lazy in attendng job thus making situation worse them selves everywhere. Look at our own country having plenty of rich un exploited resources which is still lying un used to its fullest exptent due to strikes and very many holidays along with our illiterate leaders, politicians and because of us lazy people who always look every opportunity to get holidays. At least literate people must understand their responsiblities and act in smart way so that every situation could be handled in appropriate way.

The fact of the matter is they have neglected the drainage system. That  is why a little rain can make it look like a  tsunami. It is very cloudy here. I feel like  I am to my primary days in India going to school.I enjoy this weather but not water blockage

I dont understand why the government did not announce  a holiday. It is dangerous to drive  vehicles in such conditions. The situation must be seriously dealt with.
