Mangalore, Mar 1: Campus Front of India (CFI), Karnataka organized a protest in front of the University College here on Monday March 1 condemning the act of students backed by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) protesting against a lecturer in the college.

CFI vice-president Nasir Mulky alleged that the students of the college under the due influence of government missionaries opposed the protest against the lecturer from English department Pattabhirama Somayaji by gathering major mass of students forcefully from their classrooms. They said that the act was an attack on freedom of speech granted by the Constitution. People of India are to be governed by Constitution and not by government, they asserted.

Mohammed Shakir, CFI state general secretary alleged that the students opposed a lecturer who openly expressed his views against Hinduism. He alleged that the ABVP, considered to be the power of students is now breaking the unity of students.

Thousif Ahmed, CFI president and Harsharaj Gatty, People’s Union for Civil Liberties also participated in the protest.

It can be recalled here that the Student Union of University College held a protest in the College premises on February 26 opposing the lecturer Pattabhirama Somayaji’s speech at the anti-cow slaughter protest organized by different political parties, PUCL, Komu Souharda Vedike, Jamat E Islami Hind, Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD) and other like-minded organizations from all over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

I know Pattabhiram Somayaji for the past many years. He is a great personality. He is a great human being and down to earth kind of a human right activist. He has been doing good work for the society when ABVP or CFI and other organizations were not even having presence in coastal districts.
I congratulate CFI. At least there is a voice supporting Somayaji and condemning the ABVP. But the irony is ABVP is a Hindu communal student organization and CFI is a student wing of Islamic Fundamental organization PFI. Both these can not do anything good for the student community and education system as well. All students must come out of the grips of these communal organizations. But the question is where is SFI, NSUI, the so-called secular student organizations? What are they doing?
Pattabhi needs support from all sections of the society who care for peace, justice and respect the freedom of expression. Pattabhi sir we are with you. Go on speaking the truth.

In 80s and 90s there was only one strong student union called All College Student Union. Now a days I am not hearing anything about said union. That olden days no body dare to touch any student of undivided Dakshina Kannada.

At present Sanghparivar affiliated student unions active in Manglore/Udupi,mainly ABVP,which is not promoting unity amoung the students. We are all watching, student was stabed, student was taken head on for causal talking with opposit sex ect ect

Right to speech is a fundamental right and no org have any authority to curb it.This uncident taken seriously and those resposible would be brought to land of rule.CFI well done.
