Manipal, Feb 28: Veteran journalist and former chairman of Prasar Bharati M V Kamath, expressed the fear that news may soon disappear from the pages of newspapers given the current trends of commercialization in journalism.

He was speaking at the inaugural of ‘Article 19’, the annual communication fest of  Manipal Institution of Communication The three-day event concluded on Friday February 27.

Kamath said, “The tragedy is that not only is news controlled but a time may come when we forget what news is.”  He lamented that newspapers have stopped covering important events.  “An even more dangerous development is that now news can be bought for a price. The reader is hardly aware of what is going on behind his back”, said Kamath.

Declaring the festival open, Dr Pushpa Kini, director, student affairs, Manipal University, said Article 19 of the Indian constitution has given all citizens a precious set of freedoms but these freedoms should be enjoyed with utmost responsibility and social commitment.

Speaking on the occasion, MIC director Varadesh T Hiregange said, “‘Article- 19 media festival’ provided a platform for media students from across the globe to display their talents. The festival is also an occasion to celebrate freedom of speech and expression.”

The festival was organized and managed by MIC students and featured workshops, seminars, and film screening on various issues relating to the media.

Entries were solicited for different 10 categories from all over the globe and the best five of these were chosen for the ‘Express Awards’.

On the first day, a workshop on ‘Corporate Film Making’ was held by Prem Chawla, best corporate filmmaker.

‘Goal for Globe’, a football match, was also held on the same day to raise funds for the Shiridi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital, Manipal.

The second day saw a workshop on photo journalism conducted by award winning photographer Pablo Bartholomew.

A sub event called ‘Media Imperialism( Effect of Western Media on Our Media) between Industrialist Professions and the Students’ was conducted by three experts Pradip Thomas, professor, social media and change, from Queensland, Australia, Sadanand Menon, professor from Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, and Aniruddha Bahal, co-Founder of Tehelka.

The workshop on web designing was conducted by Amit Paul. And a fun fair was held at the end of the day.

The third day of the event had a workshop on ‘PR Tools (Public Relations)’ conducted by G V Krishnan, executive vice-president, Lowe Lintas.

Mr Ashok let Pak goes to hell we don't mind my brother. But the reality is he is one sided & narrow minded writer.Certainly a writer should be non biased and broad minded.Working with Media for so long and charging it as "news can be bought for money"?? Then we can also charge him,for endorsing and spreading right wing ideals of Sangh Parivar in return he had bartered Prasara Bharthi Chairmanship!!?Whenever healthy debate takes place suddenly Pakistan's name draged in! Why???

Ashok, Udupi, Mr MV Kamath is not the truth writer. His writings are only on one side of the story. He is always over confidence in his biased ideologies and predictions. Just one example , in the year 2003 he wrote in Udayavani that "next year(2004) there is change in the world. There is Elections in India, Britain & USA. Vajpayee, Tony Blair & George Bush are strong leaders now. But difference is Blair & George Bush are losing the Power and Vajpayee is coming back to power because people of the country already decided that". This was his astrology in December 2003. Everybody knows that what happened in 2004!!!!, who lost the power and who come back to power!!!.

What a co-incidence!!! The topic of commercialization has been raised by none other than MV Kamath, the pithamaha of not only commercialization but also communilization of media, at a place notorious for creating non-existing news and twisting news.Kamath is one of the main culprit for the degeneration of the media culture in India. Kamath along with Manipal group has successfully communalized the print media. Now at the fag end of his life he is preaching Bhagavadgeetha. Shame on you Mr.Kamath.

Mr. Kamath as a journalist has utilized his thinking only on one side of the story. I had read his articles and the media cannot concentrate on the thinking of Mr. Kamath. He was writing to Udayavayani. I agree the media should promote ideas of developments, draw backs of the government and the people whereas Mr. Kamath has not utilized his thinking unfairly.

Mr MV Kamath is pioneer in commericalising the media and he started this tred by writing of his biased ideologies to fundamentalists newspapers like Udayavani. NOw how come he is blaming others. Criticism always gives rise to defence and some other writers have to defend themselves from these fanatic writers like MV kamath, so when they dont agree with him, he puts blame on the media as commercialisation. What a double take and double tongue.
