Puttur, Feb 27: A day after the gas leakage in the Konkan Gas Plant at Yemaje near Mittur, the locals heaved a sigh of relief as no further incident occurred that would endanger them. Vittal police registered a case against Udaya Bhat, the owner of the plant, on Friday February 26.

Residents of the area on Friday were of the unanimous opinion that such incidents should never happen in the future. For them, Thursday night was equivalent to a nightmare and daylight helped expel the fears of the past night.

Most of the people were destined to have food in darkness due to the power cut and the warning that they should not light a fire.

The police and fire departments had announced that use of any kind of fire or use of electronic items may cause a fire to break out due to the gas that had spread around. The electricity supply to the area was also disconnected.

“The leakage at the plant has been attributed to inadequate safety measures and could have been controlled if appropriate measures had been followed”, informed Bantwal taluk Tahsildar C N Manjunath.

He also sent a report about the incident, including these points, to the government. He has ordered the plant not to function until further orders.

The case registered against the owner is for causing environmental pollution and creating a situation harmful to the health of citizens.

Loss Estimated at Rs 15 Lac

The owner of the plant, Udaya Bhat, said that the loss is worth Rs 15 lac and 32 metric tonnes of LPG had leaked. He informed that there was enough stock of cylinders to provide customers and he would ensure that there would not be a shortage in the supply.

The fire department personnel were prepared with their equipment and worked for nearly eight hours to control the incident.
