Land Acquisition  - Pejawar Seer Defers Hunger Strike

Bangalore, Feb 27 (DHNS) : Sri Vishveshatheertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt, following a request by the government, decided to defer his hunger protest against land acquisition for the special economic zone in Mangalore till the ongoing State legislature session is over.

The Swamiji had announced that he would begin his strike from March 6 opposing large-scale agriculture land acquisition for the SEZ. He had been demanding that the government must not develop industries at the cost of farm land.

Home Minister V S Acharya and Major Industries Minister Murgesh Nirani on Friday met the Swamiji at Vidyapeetha in Bangalore to request him to give up his protest. The minister told the seer that the government has no intention of taking away fertile land from farmers.

When contacted by Deccan Herald, the Pejawar Swamiji said, “the ministers requested me to give them time till the legislature session concludes. They said that they cannot make any announcement till the session is over. I have reacted positively to the their request”. As per the present schedule, the legislature session will be held till March 26.

Asked whether the ministers have assured him of scaling down its land acquisition plan for the SEZ, the seer said, “I was given to understand that 2,500 acres of land is going to be acquired for the SEZ. But today the government said that it is already in possession of 1,800 acres for the SEZ and it requires another 750 acres. The ministers say they will hold a meeting after the session and explain the factual position”.

To a question whether he would be launching an agitation against the land acquistion for the BMICP too, he replied in the negative. He said, “I do not like to get caught in politics. All three parties have been involved in the decisions taken regarding the project. The original framework agreement should be followed.”

I totally agree with Mr. Bhandary. Religion and politics do not mix and should not be exploited by any religious leaders of any religion. That is why we have all the problems in India.

    Nagesh Nayak,

Dont' give your half-baked ideas here. Nobody will be convinced. It was YSR who controlled the Andhra-Telengana problem not the other way around. Don't confuse yourself. It was a problem simmering for more than 50 years. Ask any Andhraite for further clarification. Don't simply talk some half-cooked "idli" ideas here! YSR controlled the whole problem. The fact that it has come up again is because, YSR is dead. This has nothing to do with damn religion. You live and breathe your damn hindutva, conveniently ignoring the leadership capability of the person. Typical fundamentalist crap!

Swamijis should refrain from mis-using their position for such black mails. This does not reflect well on them consideing their position, responsibilities, age and maturity. It has been rightly said that religious leaders should not interfere with politics and vice versa. Looks like this is a big publicity stunt to hog the limelight. This can prove disastrous to all concerned.

Sri Pejavar Swamiji is a masked RSS man. Let him be honest to God and choose a single path, either Pejavar temple or RSS campus but not both. He is not preaching for the betterment of the human kind but for a section of the upper class Hindus. Doesn’t he have any answer for why the Dalits and other low caste Hindus are not allowed inside the temples, homes, functions and organisations of the upper class Hindus? Why he holds hatred for the minorities as his hidden agenda? Why he wants to make India a Hindu Rashtra which we all know that it is not possible? Why he wants to divide India in the name of religion, caste & region? A true God fearing Indians will not accept his dualism ideology.
Further the NGOs, the economists and the politicians at the grass root level in that region are the better person to judge what is best of the SEZs to them in that region. If Pejavar Mutt is located in that region does not mean that place cannot be developed or the land around the Mutt cannot be acquired by the Govt for the betterment of the region. Sir, please preach true Hinduism and not Hindutvaism.

It has it's repurcussion on the agitation and certainly a set back for the movement.I don't believe it's temporarry defering.

H.E. Swamiji pls help those people who have no voice on particular this issue and advise govt to halt maximum grabing of farmer's fertile land which is any way not good to preserve the sanctity of envoirnment.Your intervention in this burning issue of maximum industrilisation not augurs well for entire farmer community.

This is the third or fourth time the pejawar seer has postponed his so called hunger strike. If he was serious about the plight of the people he could have used his enormous influence with V S Acharya and the BJP right at the beginning and helped the people to retain their land.
