Yeddy Stands by George Fernandes, Offers to Bear Medical Expenses
From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network

Bangalore, Feb 23: Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has come forward to bear the medical expenses of ailing veteran firebrand socialist leader George Fernandes.

"I know the health of George Fernandes is not good and he is suffering. The state government is ready to bear all the medical expenses,’’ the chief minister said while talking to reporters in Bangalore.

The 79-year-old Fernandes, who hails from coastal Mangalore, has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease since the last few months.

The former union defence minister, who had also served as the convenor of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) during the six-year rule of A B Vajpayee.

"Fernandes hails from Karnataka and he is a pride of the statre,’’ Yeddyurappa said pointing out that the people of the state are proud of his contribution to the state in various capacities.

Yeddyurappa, however, declined to comment on the controversy involving Fernandes' family
members over his assets

Karnataka had borne the medical expenditure of former President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, who has settled in Bangalore after demitting office. It may be recalled that the state government has followed the practice of bearing the medical expenditure of several leading Kannada writers and film-makers, when they or their families were unable to meet the expenses.

If Yeddy is helping George he being a Kannadiga & AS A ex Minister then i have no problem. I wish George to get well soon . As a humanbeing I wish him all fast recovery. He is a noncorrupt minister.

If Yeddy is treating George because he is a minority leader then its correct as Georges contribution to minorities is nil. Even when Communal forces created serious problem to minorities in north(I think it was poor Australian priests & his children were burnt or so .Sorry I can not remember which incident it was but it was a very serious incident with which any Indian will bow his head down). George minister that time in BJP Lead ministry came forward to say there was no hand of B.Dal in that cruel incident. I can not forget this type of statement Of George who we consider our own man.By the way Who had told him to make such statement (he was a minister that time)?. If George is reading this its hightime he asks Gods forgiveness for such statements.

OFCOURSE THIS IS NOT RIGHT TO SPEAK NOW . BUT SOMETHINGS WE CAN NOT FORGET & THATS WHY I EXPRESS THE SAME

The Government is obliged to pay his medical bills as he has served faithfully for the country.
God knows whether he can liquidate his assets for his expenses or not as there might be 1000 shareholders, if its a inherited properties!  People who are talking about poor are like Judas Iscariot, who accused Jesus, when a woman pour an expensive alabaster of oil, emphasizing the poor.
If a priest is entitled for the offerings than why cant a ex defence minister, entitled for the tax payers money, that to when he has lived such a dignified lifestyle.  Stop doing prejudice with BJP or Congress but rather try to know the truth. Poor people are always around us to help them but people like him are born one in a century.

So its a privilege and honor to the government which happens only once in a century, in a corrupted system like ours.  People who are worried about taxpayers money can they please submit their taxreturns honestly to the authority!

Good move Mr. Yeddyurappa. Is this a gimmick to compensate the christian communities in Mangalore whose churches were vandalised by your men ?? The chest thumping mangalorean christian community must reject this and bear the cost of Mr. Fernandes's expenses themselves to give a fitting answer to Mr. Yeddyurappa. What do you all say

Mr.Yeddi...keep it up. Mr.George is a hero to some people and villain to some. He became popular among poor and ordinary people when was Union Leader. Being Mangalorean ,He defeated local Powerful leader Patil in the Lok Sabha election. After that he didn't look back. Mrs Gandhi announced Rs.1 lakh to catch him when he was underground for one year.(emergency time-Fernandes was involved in Dynamite case). When he was Defence Minister ,he was accused of taking bribe on Coffin Box in Kargil War ! That was really a very bad mark on his political career.

Now,he is not having control over his mind.Very bad disease. His wife Mrs Laila Kabeer joined him after 21 years..Her arrival raised eyebrows of his brother and close friends.I saw Suvarana TV's interview with Michael Fernandes (brother),Even Michael doesn't know where Geroge is living. Finally TV people connected Laila to Michael. She didn't give contact address to him but said "Michael is welcome to meet Geroge" When TV host forced her to give address, she said " I don't give to media. I will give separately to Michael" But one could clearly make out that Michael is not at all happy. He doubts Laila. To me, Michael looks straight forward person.Anyway...let great leader of Poor live his remaining life wihtout any problem. Good luck Sir.

George Fernandes may be a good person and a good politician that does not mean tax payers money can be diverted for his treatment. His son went on record that he can give the best treatment to his father. Hence do not humiliate that family and play publicity stunt by diverting the funds in the name of George Fernandes. That family is wealthy enough of to take care of the former minister. No taxpayer will be happy with this type of decision maker. All tax payers have big heart to help people like Ashwini Shetty provided there is no political gain. However no taxpayer ever stops you to pay from your personal funds for George fernandes’s treatment.

Whats wrong if Government provides Medical aid unsolicitaed to ailing and respected politician Mr.George Fernandes, who has contributed immensely to the society?. As the Defense minister he had the guts to rattle the nerves of chinese by openly declaring that they are more dangerous then Pakistanis. He was one of the rare breed of clean and non corrupt politicians india has ever seen. The asset figures mentioned by media belongs to his entire family. I donot think he has ever indulged in any sort of illegal activities to amass the wealth.

and by various adjectives when he was "Union Leader". But when he became railway minister all his so called "Brands" dissapeared. In major cities still the local trains are unbelievably over crowded. This is a small example. No body will deny that he has done lots of good work. There are more poor people who deserve more than him. Indeed it is a great gesture from Yeddi offering to bear the medical expenses of George Fernandes. However as many have said George has enough money to care of his needs, but since he is not in control of his senses, the people around him who will benifit from his wealth may not allow it to be spent for his medical needs, as their sole aim would be to see that his dies quickly so that his assets could be swallowed up.

George was King of poltics, but he is now suffering like us all human beings nearing end of journey. George was good Trade Union leader, good defense minister. Many controversies & scams in purchase of coffin & defense deals were there in his tenure too- but he came out unscathed. But when he was union leader he tried to blow up trains & tracks using dynamite-for which he was jailed at the time of emergency-this only the black dot in his long carrier. Same way Mulayam Singh tried to kill Mayavathi & later he became defense minister of India. This is India anything can happen. Atleast he has the company of his wife & son at the twilight of his life.

Sorry to all of you who have commented on this article but it seems none of you know George Fernandes. From a very young age he gave up his life for the socialist movement- be it the labor unions he founded and nurtured, be it the way he was hounded by the Indira regime because his voice was heard by thousands, be it the way he lived far away from his hometown to follow his dreams. He was so unlike the thousands of politicians who mage crores n crores for themselves (his was a clean image, unless the hollow coffin story is taken into account).
Where ws his wife through all these years, where was his son through all these years- enjoying themselves in the West while he was the kurta- pajama - chappal man.
If his properties appreciated in value it is not because of him- blame the land sharks and the inflation in this country- if he was a bad man he would have multiplied his assets hundred fold but all he did was retain the family assets- ask his brothers who stood by him not the "missing" family that has resurfaced after 30 plus years.
Sorry but Georgie boy was a model and is my model of what a politician should be.
A favorite son of Mangalore of old- he said once he was sad to see the new city spoilt.

Mr Abbas his asset now may value more but it was not made illeagal.25 years back a cent cost how much in Managalore city and now for a sq ft costs how many lakhs. He has fought for poor labour and whole life spent for that. You know one day he visited Maharastra Mantralaya by wearing a simple Kurta while he was a minister with out any body gaurd and the security personnel stopped at the gate!!!Do you know nowadays MLAs,ministers how they spend tax payers money? CM's geture is nothing but a goodwill towards him as public figure of Karnataka and we,as a Mangaloreans appriciate his good heart. Please study about him before commenting and certainly it is not 300 million as surfaced in some media.

I am very much intersted in knowing Mr George Fernades's whereabout and health.I will bring one intersting incident I came across with him when I was small boy when Mrs Indira Ghandi contested for Chikmagalur constituency.
He was treveling by ambasodor car from Shirthadi to Venoor via Paddandadka. Some of curious people waited to great him when he was crossing the said place.Suddenly car surfaced every body looking for Mr George one young amoung us asked in Tulu "George Olu uller?when Mr goerge heard this he told that young man in Tulu "ENDE YAAN MOOLU ULLE"Every body laughed and it is moment of joy really !!
Apart from this he is a great fighter,a accomplished union leader of taximen, textile industry and other labour unions of Mumbai. He was borned in Mangalore, came to light in Mumbai and fought for election while in jail in Mujafarpur and extended up to Nalanda.
When Ex- President Mr Abdul Kalam visited Dharmastala,Mr George was accompanied him and spoken in Kannada finally Mr Shri D.V.Heggade appriciated Mr George,s contribution in Indian Politics.
His role in Konkan Railway is also notable besides his clean image in politics. He is international known figure of Indian Politics and an ex defence Minister of India we Salute him for his courage on visiting several time Siachin hieght. He also had ride in Mig fighter jet.He is a public figure and want know his health in his last days with out any hinderance.I am sure he have lot of friends who are ready to take care of him.
