Kuwait, Feb 14: Born on Valentine’s Day in 1997, Sharq United kicked-off with four cricket enthusiasts working for the prestigious Caesars Group as weekend activity. Led by Mahesh Prabhu, the other equally enthusiastic cricket lovers were Swayaraj Kumar, K.S. Kalappa and S.K. Mishra. In matter of few days, seasoned cricketers in Kuwait – Patric Pinto and Alywn Fernandes with enormous contacts within the cricket fraternity in Kuwait joined in. There was no looking back since then. The club went on to win many major cricket tournaments in Kuwait. So much so, being a member of Sharq United added value to many resumes … and members of Sharq United today represent major banks and corporate entities in decent positions on weekdays and wear their cricket attire for the famous Saturday League matches in Kuwait.
Sharq United is now a unit with 30 dedicated playing members and large number of non-playing members, who support the club in many different ways. Most of the youngsters 13 years ago have turned into responsible family men today. However, the spirit of the game of cricket ensures every playing member to wear the Sharq United cricket gear and join for the every Friday ritual – the game of cricket – at 6am sharp. Be it rain, biting cold or sweltering heat … from 6am to almost noon time, it is normal cricketing weather for all Sharq United members.
In November 2009, Sharq United bid farewell to the club’s founder – Mahesh Prabhu, who had to relocate to Bahrain after 13 years of memorable life in Kuwait. The rock solid Executive Eleven at Sharq United continues its cricket activities and welfare services to its members in a praiseworthy manner. As Sharq United gets into the teens with its 13th birthday, big celebrations are planned by the club’s new and enthusiastic leadership team on Friday, 26th February 2010 at the Sharq United home ground in Kuwait City.
