Panaji, February 5: “Konkani language is a fundamental element of Goan identity and unites all Goans irrespective of religion and lifestyle”, said commissioner for NRI Affairs, Eduardo Faleiro.

He was speaking as a chief guest at a function organized by the Goa Konkani Academy to commemorate the Official Language Day.

Faleiro opined that the survival of Konkani is essential for preservation of the Goan identity in future. Comparatively there are small numbers of Konkani speaking people. Most of them use English, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam or other languages in their daily conversation which the mother tongue cannot be developed, he added.

Faleiro further said that a necessary prerequisite for the survival of the Konkani language is harmony among Konkani writers in different scripts.  All incentives available to the writers in Devanagri script including awards of the Sahitya Academy, representation in literary bodies and financial assistance should also be available to writers of Roman script. School education, however, should be in the Devanagri script, he insisted.

How many more years we will witness the Official language Act in a cage? 23 years have passed, God knows how many more will go. The stalwarts of Konkani are least bothered to make the law applicable. may be they are frightened of the opposite lobby who in fact are responsible to attain the official status for Konkani. There is a Gold Cup. Who would not want it to be acquired when you are eligible to contest? The crieteria should be universal and not fomulated by the aspirants of the Gold Cup. I am surprised at the statement made by Mr. Nagesh Karmali that all are free to write in any scipt of Konkani.

I welcome the statement and congratulate him. This should be the attitude of all the sympathisers of Konkani. With Official Language Act, the scipt of the same cannot be changed now. Then why is the hue and cry to go hand inhand by all script writers and well-wishers? I firmly believe that all the scripts of Konkani are the flavours of the sandy.Devnagiri script is the link script, it should be honoured and adhered to. But we cannot withstand the story without brother and sisters uniform. Let us work unitedly to flourish our mother tongue and take it to heights whoever not even thought of. Jai Konkani
