Bangalore, Jan 28: A day after announcing plans for selling rice and wheat at subsidised prices through Janata Bazars and government-run cooperative societies from February 1 as part of the efforts to curb the spiralling prices of the foodgrains, the B S Yeddyurappa regime has proposed to hike Nandini milk price by Rs 2 to 3 a litre.

The Yeddyurappa-led BJP regime, who made it prestige issue to oust JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda’s elder son and former minister H D Revanna from the chairmanship of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and install Bellary mining lord and Tourism and Infrastructure Minister G Janardhana Reddy’s brother G Somashekara Reddy, has now directed the apex body to work out a detailed proposal on the hike.

Karnataka’s Cooperation Minister Laxman S Savadi, who addressed a news conference in Bangalore on Thursday, disclosed that the KMF has mooted the proposal to hike in the wake of reduction of its profits.

Keeping in view the interests of consumers and famers, the Department has asked the KMF to come out with a written proposal on the hike. If the proposal is okayed, he said milk price was likely to go up by Rs 2 or Rs 3 a litre.

Nandini milk is priced between Rs 16 and Rs 22 a litre, depending on the fat content, the minister said pointing out that the price was the lowest among the southern states.

Savadi said the price hike was essential as producers were burdened by rising production costs which make dairy farming unviable.

The benefit of price hike would be shared between the farmers and the KMF at the ratio 70:30. Out of 14 milk unions in the State, the profits of Gulbarga and Belgaum district milk unions declined sharply, the minister said.

The price of Nandini milk was last hiked by Rs 2 a litre in November 2007.

KMF’s attempts to increase milk prices were stalled last year by the Government, which instead announced Rs 2 a litre as incentive for farmers.

The minister said an order has been issued for holding elections to management committees of all primary, federal and apex cooperatives in the State.

Elections to management committees of primary cooperative societies would be held before March 22, federal cooperatives before April 10 and apex bodies by April 29, he added.

The government must encourage areca nut garden growers to cultivate paddy. Presently due to untimely rain both areca nut and paddy fields are in danger. Hence a day will come all us have to eat only areca nut and no rice. The problem of the farmer in south kanara is high cost of cultivating paddy and due which every one has chosen easy way to make money. Also due to untimely rain some of the harvest paddy as well as areca nut are also lost and due to that prices are increased. If areca nut prices are increased or decreased people cannot quench their hunger with the areca. If paddy is lost, which will give grievous results to the society and nation.

Mr Nagesh Nayak, Bangalore, I really feel pity for you and your perverted thinking. How can you justify the move to increase the price of Nandini Milk by Rs 2 or 3 a litre and claim that the money reaches the farmer? I don't know whether you know the ground realities. The same government proposes to sell subsidised rice and wheat because of spiralling prices. In that case, why increase milk prices? Also, the BJP government sanctioned special incentive of Rs 2 a litre to farmers in order to win their votes. It opposed and ousted H D Revanna, when he sought to increase the price by Rs 2 or 3 and now after getting G Somashekara Reddy installed as KMF chief, wants to do the same. Why the government has stopped payment of the incentive since last five months and has since discontinued it? The arrears of incentives run into several hundred crores of rupees. Are you saying Jai Ho BJP for this great achievement? Anybody would have said, SHAME!

Good move by the Government. Even fodder and other maintenance expenses have gone up. Farmers must get their due share and they must be compensated. No need to shout or make issue out of it. It is need of the hour. If any one opposes the price hike of milk, then they must be living in isolation. First for bring the prices of other essential commodities and milk price shall automatically come down.

All along, the milk producing farmers have been suffering due to the poor pricing, and finally some relief to them!. I personally know how costly it is to produce the milk, and the efforts and hard work go therein, specially when there is severe scarcity of farming labour. The cost of raising the cows and cattle has sharply gone up in the recent times, in particular, the price of fodder has gone through the roof. The review of milk pricing should be on a yearly basis to keep up with the inflation (CPI index), as suggested by George Borromeo as well.

It is a viscious cycle, once the cost of inputs are raising you have to raise the prices of output,to strike a balance between two. Hence the price rise cribbing is mostly politicaly motivated. Some time I feel why can't the Government raise the prices of essential commodities and services evenly, that is 5-10% every year.Instead giving shock treatment to its citizen once in 2-3 years??
