Yeddyurappa says 'Cut off Arms of Church Vandals'

Yeddyurappa says cut off arms of church vandals

Bangalore, Jan 28 (IANS): Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who has been criticised for vandalisation of churches in the state, on Wednesday said hands of those who indulge in such acts should be "cut off".

"I am telling you chop off the hands of these people if you catch them," Yeddyurappa told a public meeting in Karwar in Uttara Kannada district.

"You may wonder why a Chief Minister is saying such things. But what can be done when people try to hit at the very basis of our society, that of peace and brotherhood?" he said. And he repeated: "cut off those hands".

On Monday, a statue of Mother Mary in the premises of Holy Family church at Hinkal, about 10 km from Mysore, was broken and the glass casing of a grotto of St. Mary at St. Antony's Church in Teranmakki village, 10 km from Bhatkal city, in Uttara Kannada district, was vandalised.

Governor H R Bhardwaj referred to the incidents in his Republic Day address Tuesday.

"Karnataka has long been distinguished for its tolerant and peace-loving citizens. People from all communities and faiths have lived here for centuries in harmony. The fresh attacks on churches are regrettable," the governor said in the presence of Yeddyurappa, his cabinet colleagues and top civil and police officials at the Republic Day function in Bangalore.

"It is the constitutional duty of every government to deal firmly with the forces which tend to disturb communal peace and harmony," Bhardwaj said.

Yeddyurappa said Monday and reiterated the next day that the frequent attacks on churches was a conspiracy to bring bad name to his government.

"The fact that these took place on the eve of the Republic Day clearly showed it was a conspiracy to tarnish the image of my government," he asserted.

If you really mean it, then there are culprits in front of you who attacked the churches in Mangalore and claimed their criminal act in the presence of the media, why do you hesitate to act on them. We Christians do not believe in ‘eye for an eye’ philosophy. We believe in love, equal rights and freedom to practice ones religion, which is our constitutional right.

Being tough and acting tough are two different modes, which we understand very well. We know that you are in the acting tough category. You can fool some people only sometimes, but you cannot fool all the people all the time with your tears and such erratic words. Dr. Acharya has spoken the words from the bottom of his heart that he cannot do anything in this regard.

Dear Readers let's appreciate Mr. CM Yeddyurappa statement with positive outlook. Before the church was attacked in Sept.2009 the few fanatic BJP's impression about Christians was venom but after the attacks our positive reaction by the community and religious leaders has changed their prejudice character of few BJP leaders and the frustration of CM and his statement itself is a witness. This doesn’t mean that we Christians should chop arms of church vandals not in action and not even in mind but to feel compassion for those lost sheep. Here the words of Bishop Derek Fernandes, the Bishop of Karwar (Uttara Kannada district) statement after the recent church attack in Karwar should remind us how Christians approach should be. “ More than the punishment, our first priority should be the change of heart of those who engage themselves in destructive activities, the bishop explained. Let’s pray to Almighty that peace will prevail in our State and light will overcome the darkness and evil will vanish forever.

Dear Eddy, what is the point in raising the issue now and showing secularism .Please take care of yourself and your CM chair. If you repeat these sentences at the public speeches the central sangh pariwar office will summons notice to you. The people who did the attacks on churches in year September 2008 just played a trial sequence of the real movie which they want to launch in future years to come. The trailers of the movie was not censored and approved without much pressure on them by the law makers and police. So the producers got the green signals to do more such trials and they will keep doing this. The State government only appointed a commission with a old retired judge who will otherwise has no job at the government Houses . He is not costing much to the government as he is duly paid the pension and housing..He will prepare a long report of thousands of pages with help of government babus and this will be published when victims will almost forget the issue and the report will be dumped in the government houses.

I am against Mr. Yeddyurappa’s statement. This is a disgrace, inability and ineptness of the Karnataka bjp administration. Pakistan became a victim of its own supported Al Qaida and Taliban. BJP is the victim of its own supported fundamental organizations. Bjp leaders have only big mouth to speak against its own citizens. In my opinion Christians should not go to chop off anybody’s hands as Mr. Yeddyurappa is provoking us to do so.

All should know that there is no such law to chop off hand, leg or head or to shoot. Those who do so will be behind the bars as per IPC laws. Mr. Yeddyurappa what happened to your Goonda Act? Dear Mr. Yeddyurappa if you are unable to secure worship places (church, Temple, Mosque or any other worship places) resign immediately.

The statement reveals the frustration, anger and helplesness of the Chief Minister. He may be wanting to take action against those who are doing these things, but he is held at bay by the vested interests in his own government and his party. One the one hand he has to take the blame from all christians, muslims and hindus who know that these are evil acts, but at the same time the the fundamentalist lobby in his government are not allowing him to take any action.

Therefore in his anger he is directing the victims to take the law and order in their own hands, if they want justice. It is an indirect way of accepting his failure and announcing his own helplessness. Today the Chair has become a crown of throns for Yeddi and he must be regretting the day that he became Chief Minister. What is driving him to continue as Chief Minister is his own ego and pride, as giving up the chair is like accepting defeat.

Attacks on religious places whether it is church, temple or mosque should be condemned by every individual as our country is a secular country. By constitution every individual has the right to practice his religion. If the authorities feel that they are illegally built in government property (as some readers commented in other issues on the same subject), then there is a law. Making proper and correct use of it serve a notice (without partiality or bias regardless of religion) for them and publish in the papers the illegal property, instead of allowing some culprits to do their dirty job to imbalance the society.

Further ,the ruling party states that the act is by opposition, then some day you were also in opposition, and of course in the near future you will be again in the opposition. That means you both ruling and opposition act very stupidly and blame each other when you will act on the real issues of promoting harmony. Dear politicians, don't forget that you are not permanent here on the earth, just take the example of recent earthquake in Haiti and learn from it. Don’t try to challenge God the almighty, perhaps you might be playing with human being but don’t play with God and test his patience.

As a Chief Minister of a state, Mr. CM’s statements are very shameless and disturbing. Yet, Home ministers statement is contradictory. Statements from both personalities are not good enough to appreciate. If they are helpless in protecting an individual , then they should step down from their position, so that a more honest and capable person do his job. We are not in Hitler’s era, it is clearly provoking a common man to do something nasty out of frustration by taking law and order in his hands. When election took place, that time V. S Acharya where was he? Didn’t he know that Karnataka is 10,000 sqm, with 1.2 crores of people living there, having 3,000 churches and mosques, 43,000 temples. Only after the church attach he realized this? His statements are clear indications that he does not want to do anything for the hasty acts of some. If he cannot protect, then why should he take the tax from people whom he can not protect. Why the hard earn money from a common man is wasted for nothing.

I am surprised to hear such cut throat words from Mr. Yeddi( Head of State). If this is the punishment that you want for the the Church Attackers, why don't you first try cutting your hands and live by example. Don't just fool the general public, they know how you and your home minister supported these groups indirectly who vandalized the church property and clergies. We all know that they had your government blessings before carrying out these attrocities against the minority men, women and clergies. Shame on you to give such statements today, just to garner the votebank as you very well know that you are not going to survive in Government too long. The law and order is in control today in Mangalore is only because of the Two able officers like our current Deputy commissioner and Current Superintendent of Police. The CM is acting tough. Though he didnt mean it, message is very loud and clear to criminals that he mean business and is very serious about it. I like his statement. Some time such tough talks do have positive impact. I request the CM to go after police and intelligence and reprimand the culprits, book them and bring them in to justice. Should give more power to police and district administration in dealing with such issues. CM should float a motion in the assembly for enacting toughest law and punishing those who are responsible for communual violence, instigation and intolerant towards other religion. A minimum 7-10 years jail term with hefty fines will help. Talking tough is not enough but must act tough. CM or any one cant take the law in to their hands. Fast track courts must be set up and speedy and timely delivery of justice is the need of hour. Dear CM saheb, please expose those parties, politicians, personnel and organisations those are behind these attacks. Or else it will be too late.. All the best to you sir.....
