Mangalore, Dec 15: A group of women from Kulshekar parish protested near a bakery situated on the church compound, whose owner is accused of attacking a woman and demanded his immediate arrest on Monday December 14.

The protest was against the attack on Mariet Pinto, a parish council member, who went to buy milk on Monday morning.

She was allegedly beaten up by Clifford D’Souza, owner of the bakery. The woman has filed a complaint in Kadri police station and the police have registered a case.

The women demanded the immediate arrest of Clifford and strict action against him.

One of the protesters, Pauline D’Souza, said that the attack on a woman shows he has no respect for society. “The attack is not only illegal but also anti-religious”, she added.

“If strict action taken is not taken against the accused, such attacks will continue on other women in the parish”, she said adding that the incident is a shame to society. Protesters held placards demanding the arrest of the accused.

Police said that the first information report (FIR) based on the complaint given by Mariet has been registered and they are conducting an investigation.

Mariet was admitted to the hospital after she was found with injuries sustained in the attack.

The attack followed misunderstanding in a matter related to the issuing of a pamphlet against the Church parish council as the victim refused to receive the same, said sources.

I totally agree with Kiran of Bangalore, Clifford will not beat Mariet without any reason. She must have definitely irritated and instigated him which has provoked him to do such a thing. To the women who protested, I would suggest that they correct her mistakes also so that she behaves in a more ladylike manner with men.

No man has the guts to slap a woman, without any good reason. In this case, we strongly believe that there is something wrong from the woman's side.

I agree what has happened is wrong one has no right to beat another person and that too a lady is really an offence wherein country like India is known as Bharath MAtha and all of us dwelling here irrespective of caste n creed, we respect her and honour her, hence it is obvious that we need to protect our country women rather than exploiting them. Clifford there must be ur wife or daughter, if not atleast a mother otherwise would not be here....god forbidden it shud not happen hope someone else had beaten up them like what would you do????? so therefore think before you act....dont take women for granted....

Whatever the provocation, assaulting or attacking anybody, especially a woman, is not justified. Going by the report, it is obvious that the bakery owner attacked the woman, who is also a parish council member, in the morning when she went to buy milk allegedly because she refused to accept a pamphlet against a parish council member. If this is true, it certainly explains the gathering of women, including young girls, in such large numbers and display of placards. Evidently, the protest was well organised and there are different hidden forces at work to settle scores over some dispute in the church parish council. Honestly, I don't think verbal arguments or even attack (if it really happened) was the REAL reason behind the entire episode. The persons involved should settle the issue internally instead of tarnishing the image of the church and the community and thereby providing fodder for the anti-Christian elements. Let us not turn ourselves into objects of ridicule or snide comments. Why should Kulshekar get such bad reputation for intolerance and rude behaviour?

I totally condemn such an attack and the accused must be punished for it according to the law.it is cowardly to attack women. now having said this , this attack cannot be compared to any other incident. This is an attack made due to rage or anger. The protests are also justified . iam sure the cops will do its job.
