Udupi, Dec 14: It is a very little known fact that there are only two sets of twin sisters who are Karate experts in the world. One set of twins are believed to be in Malaysia and the other set is not far away, but in Padubelle. These twin sisters-Sharol and Carol have brought laurels and fame not only to their family but also to their schools and village by winning various competitions right from the   Taluka to District and State and National level.

Sharol and Carol are the twin daughters of Donald and Jannet Quadros of Palke in Pamboor, Padubelle. Both Donald and Jannet recognised the potential of their twin daughters and encouraged them to join the Karate classes right for the first standard. Jannet herself was a sports person while studying up to 10th standard at Belman. She was very good in athletics especially in running and filed games such as Volleyball, Throw ball and Kho-kho.

Along with their education at the Don Bosco School at Shirva, Sharol and Carol were enrolled in the Karate classes right form standard one which they continued with the progress of their education. They were in the Don Bosco School, Shirva up to 7th standard. From this year they have joined the nearby Shri Narayana Guru English Medium High School for 8th standard where they continue their Karate classes as well.

According to the Karate instructor, Mr. Nityanand Kemmanu, Sharol and Carol have been excellent Karate trainees. They have  been winning competitions at various levels right from the Taluka to National level since four to five years. Both the sisters are Black Belt 2nd Dan holders. During this year both Sharol and Carol participated at the National level Karate competitions held at Kerala, Mangalore and Haveri and won gold and silver medals. In the competitions held in Kerala-Sharol got one each Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and Carol won one each of Gold and Silver medals; at Mangalore, Sharol bagged one Gold and one Bronze medal and Carol bagged two Gold and one Silver medal and finally at Haveri, Sharol won three Gold medals and Carol one Gold and two Silver medals. Their instructor Nityanand Kemmanu smilingly said that both the sister would reach the final practically in all the tournaments and would share the Gold and Silver medals among themselves.

For their phenomenal achievement in the field of Karate, both the twin sisters were felicitated by awarding them Pratibha Puraskar at Mulki, at Udupi by the Karate Institution and by their own school, Shri Narayana Guru Group of Educational Institutions. Their Black Belt 2nd Dan examination was conducted by Wyne MacDonald from Australia,
who is International Chief Instructor of Karate.

Nityananda Kemmanu, who is the instructor of Sharol and Carol himself is 5Dan Black Belt holder. He had won successively for three years the National level Karate Competition held at Mumbai from 2000 to 2002. He has been a referee at National level Karate competitions. He is the representative of the Chikmagalur District on the Karnataka School Games Federation. He is also Budokon Karate examiner for the Karnataka State. Nityananda is a dedicated social worker and is a member of various cultural and sports organizations. He is also Udupi Rural Block Youth Congress President.

According to Nityananda Kemmanu, there are around 60 branches of the Karate Association all over the Udupi District comprising of 4,500 students and 250 instructors. The Karate classes in the Shri Narayana Guru School are being conducted since six years and around 40 students are trained at this centre.

Nityananda Kemmanu is very proud of Sharol and Carol. He considers them to be his best trainees who are hard working and very much interested in this kind of sports. He appreciates the encouragement given to these twin girls by their parents-Donald and Jannet. He says that in modern times girls should be trained in defensive tactics such as Karate so   that they can defend themselves when suddenly attacked by robbers or molesters.

Dear Sharol and Carol, In these days of commercialization of Karate, every third person gets a black belt but the standard of performance is Zero with most of the karateka's. So my advice to you both is not to become like the masses, rather stand out of the crowd and practice and build a good standard. Learn the self defense techniques, which are helpful in real life situations, build the mental strength and build your self confidence in public. When you have attained the required skills think of educating other girls and younger generations and pass on this knowledge and technique to them. Being a II Dan black belt myself, I know how hard the one has to work to become a black belt (I got my Black belt in 1988). Don't just concentrate on practicing Kata and exercises, learn to defend yourself in real life situations from an attacker, which I am sure will benefit you both in the long run. My sincere wishes and congratulations to you both and I appreciate your parents support in this cause.
