Shiv Sena's Shraddha Jadhav is New Mumbai Mayor

Mumbai, Dec 1 (IANS) Shiv Sena's Shraddha Jadhav was Tuesday elected Mumbai mayor.

Securing 114 votes, Jadhav trounced the opposition Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Priscilla Kadam who got 96 votes, according to an official.

The Congress' hopes of bagging the prestigious post were ruined after seven corporators of the Samajwadi Party (SP) boycotted the elections at the last minute.

Another six corporators of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) abstained from voting, which gave the benefit to the Sena candidate. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has 227 elected members.

This is the second consecutive time a woman will be mayor of Mumbai. The elections were necessitated after the two-and-half year mayoral term of Shubha Raul ended.

The elections were due three months ago (September) but were postponed on account of the code of conduct in force for the Maharashtra assembly elections in October. Raul consequently got 33 months as mayor.
