Mangalore, Nov 24: The Catholic Action League (CAL), Bendoor, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. A two-day celebration will be held on the open grounds of the Bendoor Church to mark the occasion.

Glen Rego is the current president of the association and is spearheading preparations for the event to be held on Saturday November 28 and Sunday November 29.

Well-known dramatist, singer, and composer Claud D'Souza will be directing the Konkani play 'Gatt Dhor Sodinaka' written by Sunny A D'Souza which will be staged on Saturday.

The official ceremony will be held on Sunday evening with Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza presiding over the programme.

Bendoor parish priest Fr Peter Noronha, as well as Prof Alban Castelino and Leslie Rego, both former presidents of the association, will be the guests of honour.

A telephone directory of Bendoor parish will be released during the event. Former association presidents and spiritual directors will also be honoured.

Glen Rego has thanked all former members and presidents for their contribution to the success of the organization. He appealed to all the members and office-bearers to attend the event if possible as everyone could not be contacted personally.

In 1934, a group of active youth of Bendoor parish under the able leadership of Bernard Martis started the Catholic Action League (CAL) with the motto “Unity is our strength”. Since then this group has flourished and has been helpful to the parish as well as society from time to time. This association has served the parish and society through its social, spiritual, cultural, and other helpful deeds.

Several Konkani stalwarts have led the association in their time and have contributed to the betterment of youth within Bendoor parish as well as outside.

Late Louis Mascarenhas, late V J P Saldanha, Prof Alban Castelino, late Vally Vaz, Leo D'Souza (Liyab), Austin Prabhu, Claud D'Souza, Joswin Pinto, and Leslie Rego are some of the former presidents of the association.

Even since CAL began in 1934, the concept has bee adopted by many parishes and has spread to almost all parishes of Mangalore diocese.

But, in 1960, late Bishop Basil D'Souza re-organized youth activities in the church under the name ICYM because the Indian Catholic Youth Movement was started on a national-level.

However, quite a few parishes continued with CAL including Bendoor. But Bendoor's name will be remembered in history because of its strong foundation and the hundreds of youth who were shaped here. The hidden talents of the parish youth came to the fore and a stage was provided for them to exhibit their talent. Since the past 74 years, there have been annual day celebrations with various activities.

CAL members as a group meet on the first and third Sunday of every month.

Happy Anniversary to all the present & past members of CAL. It was indeed a great honor to be a member of this organization. It was really nostalgic to view all the old pictures of the organization. I still remember the 60th CAL celebrations. I was little at that time, but it was truly a grand event. All the best for the 75th anniversary. It will surely be a huge success. Best wishes Moushmi Former Member of CAL bendur.

Congratulations to C.A.L.Bendur. I am glad Catholic Action League Bendur is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee on 28th and 29th of November.C.A.L. was my launching pad and am proud to say that I was one of the active members of this great and vibrant organization. This organization has moulded me to be successful in life. I had been the member for 5 years and the General Secretary for two consecutive years of this organization till I left Mangalore in 1975 to the shores of the Middle East.

Those  were the good old days, CAL was most vibrant in all-round activities. I still remember our stage programmes held almost every two months. We had along with us veterans like Henry Rodrigues, the late John D’Souza, Austin D’Souza Prabhu, Cyril Peris, Wilfred Pinto, Edward Rodrigues , Arthur Fernandes, Alwyn Fernandes, Arthur D’Souza, Claud D’Souza, Percy Noronha,Claud pais, Christophe Mascarenhas, Oswald Saldanha , Walter Colaco and many others. I was really touched to see the photograph of 1974-1975 - that was my last photograph with CAL and I am happy and glad to note the spirit and enthusiasm still continues on the strong foundation laid by our founding members of the past.

As I congratulate, I am really sad that I will be missing this great occasion as I land in Mangalore on 29th November evening. If had known earlier I would have been more than happy to witness this 75th glorious year’s celebration of this great organization. My best wishes to the Office bearers and Members of CAL and wish and pray that CAL may complete its Century  in the years to come

Dear Members, First of all let me congratulate all the former and present members a very happy anniversary. Catholic action league is one of the first youth associations in the history of mangalore diocese. I am extremely proud of being part of this wonderful organisation for more than eight years. Through CAL, I could meet great people and enhance my talents. Today whatever i have achieved , i am extremely proud to say that its because of CAL. I could communicate with many stalwarts of konkani fields only through CAL. CAL has given many talents to the society. CAL has always been a part of many good things in the church and to the community.

As I was looking into the pictures of yesteryears it really shows the efforts you have taken to collect these pictures. We had a blast during the 60th anniversary under the leadership of leslie rego and I hope the same this year as well. Though I may not be there personally during the celebration, i will definitely pray and wish for the success of the celebrations. Wishes to all Uttam Menezes Former President of CAL bendur and Former Secretory of ICYM central Council
