Ganesh Rai and Prakash Payyar

Karnataka Sangha Sharjah in their prominent programmes have proved to be unique by identifying Kannadigas in UAE who have excelled in their role, printed and published the achievements of various Karnataka Sanghas in the region in Kannada language, arranged picnics, sports activities, get together, ladies throwball events, men’s volleyball events, musical orchestras, blood donation campaign and many more such that set an example for other associations to follow.

About Karnataka Sangha

In order to comb in all those like minded Kannadigas in the soil of UAE under one umbrella, the late Umesh Nanthoor opened up a forum called Karnataka Sangha Sharjah under the auspices of Sharjah Indian Association in the year 2003. He was the first elected president of KSS, the sole aim of which is to serve the motherland as able children, wiping out the differences of castes and religion, doing away with politics of any kind and uniting for the cause of developing art, language, literature and folklore in this part of the world.

This then resulted in creating awareness about one’s motherland, culture and respect among the children of Kannadigas living in UAE. The youth started showing their talent which was recognized and honoured by the management of KSS.  KSS then produced able leaders like Ganesh Rai, Prabhakar Ambalthare and Noel D’Almeida with Mark Denis as the patron who took forward KSS activities. KSS also had enthusiastic secretaries like Prabhakar Shenoy, Mohammed Shahad, Shantaram Achar, Satish Poojary and Nithyanand.

Mr.Prakash Payyar is committed to Kannada language and so to its literary values. As a dramatist par excellence he succeeded to break away silently & boldly from popular stage towards quality literary rich entertainment by staging award winning Kannada Dramas for the first time in the Gulf by nurturing & harnessing local talents. In the recent two years he staged Kannada stage shows which were not only acclaimed by local Kannada stage lovers but also by the famous Kannada literary luminaries whom he invited to preside his shows. Payyar’s forum ‘Dwani Pratisthana’ has strived against adversaries in the Emirates and succeeded to being recognized by the culturally rich Gulf Kannadigas as a group who are committed & different.  Keep it up Payyar!.

Ganesh Rai in recent years has been recognized as ‘messiah’ of Kannada culture, folk arts and language. Many still do not know his service to Karnataka culture during his years in his native place Madikeri where he was doyen of culture, Art & Culture of the City. After happily serving many years behind the screen he was suddenly catapulted to the front stage due to the sudden untimely demise of his local mentor late Umesh Nanthoor. As a President of Sharjah Karnataka Sangha he did fill up the void with utmost dedication and succeeded to propel the Sangha towards promoting cultural, literature & folk arts of Karnataka. Today every Sangha & Forum seek his service for varied functions and he never says ‘No’ to any call which is directed towards serving Kannada & Karnataka in its varied forms.

Thus, The Karnataka Sangha Sharjah under the present President Noel D’Almeida with Mark Denis as the patron and Team deserves all the Kudos for nominating these two torch bearers of Karnataka Culture & Literature for this year’s MAYURA AWARD.
