Mangalore, Nov 7: The distribution of property title deeds in the model Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R & R) Colony for the Project Displaced Families of Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited and the inauguration of 100 kilo litre capacity Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) were held at the R & R Colony of MSEZ in Kulai today.  Mayor M Shankar Bhat along with a host of dignitaries inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp, in a glittering ceremony attended by members of project displaced families.

In his inaugural speech Mayor Shankar Bhat lauded the efforts of MSEZ in providing a model R & R Colony for PDFs with all the modern amenities.  “To get something we have to lose something.  Though we all have a special attachment with the place we are born and brought up with the sacrifice by these families will go a long way in reducing the pain of losing the land when the people begin to enjoy the benefits of MSEZ. This is the age of globalization and the entire world is changing.  We need change for the betterment of the society.  This R & R Colony has shaped up in an excellent way much better than some of the private townships which are coming up in the city”, he stated.

Recalling the initial misconception he had about MSEZ thinking it to be a real estate scam, Shankar Bhat said that constant interaction with the officials of MSEZ and the R & R package offered by them to the displaced families has changed his perception about MSEZ.  “MSEZ will offer tremendous opportunity for the garment industry to flourish and would emerge as an alternative to the Beedi Industry in the district, which in turn would provide gainful employment for the people of the district especially the women”, he pointed out.

About 630 sites are allotted to PDFs in the R & R Colony at Kulai but only 50 families were symbolically given the title deeds of the property at the function today.  Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MSEZL A G Pai said that the title deeds will be delivered to their homes personally to the remaining members coming Wednesday.

COO of MSEZL A G Pai welcoming the gathering pointed out that the socio-economic index of PDFs Arial would improve due to the facilities provided to the PDFs in R & R Colony.  “We have provided all modern amenities like aerial bunch electric cables, underground drainage system, broad roads, excellent street light facilities, water supply, Public Park, community centres etc.  Facilities like post office, bank, health centre and other promised facilities will come up once the colony has population required to start these amenities”.  A G  Pai said that the model R & R colony stands as a testimony to the support and co-operation extended by the people to MSEZL project.

Abhaychandra Jain, MLA, presided over the function.

Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, President D K District Jilla Panchayat, Rajani Dugganna, Dy Mayor, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, Bhujanga Shetty, President, Permude-Bajpe-Kalavaru Hitharakshana Vedike and K Vijay Kumar Shety, ex-MLA and Progressive Farmers Hitharakshana Vedike were present on the dais and distributed the property title deeds to the beneficiaries.

S T Karkera Dy Manager R & R Colony and Personnel presented the vote of thanks.  Raghavendra Holla, R & R Officer of MSEZL compered the programme.

In the midst of the programme a small group of 15-20 members shouted slogans “we want justice” when the stage function was on.  They were demanding that property title deeds should be given to all beneficiaries at the function.  The group  fizzled out after shouting  few slogans.
