BJP Concedes Defeat in Maha, Pawar credits Congress policies for Win

Mumbai Oct 22 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Thursday conceded defeat in Maharashtra, saying the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance needed to ponder why it lost the Oct 13 assembly elections.

State BJP secretary Vinod Tawade said the Shiv Sena and BJP would do a lot of "soul-searching".

State BJP chief Nitin Gadkari said the party had to accept defeat and look ahead.

Both the leaders spoke to mediapersons separately as early trends showed that the Congress and its ally the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were poised to retain power in Maharashtra.

Pawar credits Congress policies for Maharashtra win

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS) The central government's policies have helped in the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party alliance's good showing in the Maharashtra elections, union agriculture minister and NCP chief Sharad Pawar said here Thursday.

He added that a decision on the chief minister's post "would be taken by the Congress party" and he did not want any problems from his party on that front.

Pawar said the combine had done particularly well in rural areas. "Congress and NCP are doing very well and the response in rural Maharastra has been extremely good - there we have gotten more response than what was expected," Pawar told reporters as he left his residence here.

The NCP-Congress combine had leads in 135 seats of the 288 seat assembly in the state.

He attributed the success in elections to the Congress policies at the centre. "The Congress policy at the centre was implemented by our government in Maharashtra and was appreciated by the voters."

He also admitted that his party's individual performance was "impressive" and that critics who predicted that the party would fair poorly were wrong.

"NCP has fared well. We have a strong base team of youngsters who are working hard and the voting percentage of our party is impressive," Pawar said.

Discussing the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) denting the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine, he said: "We had expected them to get 10-12 seats."

Pawar justified his 'retirement options' saying that his party was "encouraging the younger generation". He said: "Our generation has the reponsibility of encouraging newer leadership."

Congress says it will form government in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Oct 22 (IANS) Maharashtra's ruling Congress party said Thursday that it was confident of retaining power, with early projections indicating it could touch the half-way mark in the 288-member assembly.

Election officials said the Congress and its ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) were in the lead in 126 constituencies while the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were ahead in 99 constituencies.

Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) put up an impressive show in cosmopolitan Mumbai, weaning away traditional Shiv Sena votes.

The MNS contested 125 seats across Maharashtra. The party's heavyweight Bala Nandgaonkar was leading in Sewri in central Mumbai while Waman Mhatre could win in Thane district.

Congress Chief Minister Ashok Chavan told journalists that he was "quite hopeful" of forming a Congress-NCP government even as victory celebrations erupted outside Congress president Sonia Gandhi's house in New Delhi.

Chavan, who took over as chief minister following the Mumbai terror attack of November 2008, said he was sure the Congress would be the single largest party in the state.

Political analysts said the Congress-NCP alliance could end up with 141 seats in the Maharashtra assembly. Independents, rebels from major parties and smaller groups could corner over 40 seats.

Congress stalwarts were doing well across Maharashtra, and the Congress was also doing much better than the NCP, election officials said.

Among those leading were Ashok Chavan and Congress veteran Narayan Rane, Praniti Shinde and Amit Deshmukh, daughter and son of former chief ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Vilasrao Deshmukh respectively, NCP's Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal as well as Jayant Patil.

BJP leader Smriti Irani admitted that things were not looking rosy for her party, which fared poorly in Maharashtra.

"We are going through challenging times," she said. But she added that "there are many reasons to rethink" about the BJP's election strategies in Maharashtra.

Assembly Results: Congress Ahead in Three States

New Delhi, Oct 22 (PTI): Ruling Congress-NCP combine was ahead of Shiv Sena-BJP in Maharashtra, leading in over three dozen seats, according to initial trends available after counting for Assembly elections to three states began today.

Assembly Elections 2009In Haryana, Congress is leading in four seats while opposition INLD and BJP is ahead in one each seat, while in Arunachal Pradesh ruling Congress was ahead in six seats.

In Maharashtra, having a total of 228 seats, Congress-NCP combine is ahead in 37 seats while the opposition coalition is ahead in 34 seats.Raj Thackeray-led MNS and the Third Front were leading at one seat each.

Shiv Sena candidate Kedari Raibage leads Varsha Gaikwad of Congress in Mumbai's Dharavi constituency while Congress candidates are leading in Shahada (Dhule) and Solapur. Those leading include Industry minister Narayan Rane (Kudal) and Union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde's daughter Praniti (Solapur).

Stakes are high in Maharashtra, where there are several chief ministerial aspirants. Rivals Shiv Sena and its offshoot MNS are fighting for the same political space and the ruling Congress-NCP combine is aiming a hat-trick. There are 1,820 independents, mostly party rebels, in fray. The Congress has been ruling the state for the last 10 years in alliance with the NCP.

To all those who are fans of BJP and critics of Congress, whatever happens, we will vote for any party, within India or oustside India save the communual and devisive party like BJP. The day is very very near that last nail will be hit to the coffin of BJP. We dont need a party that devides communities, attacks churches and masjids. The think tank of BJP and its parivar is busy in finding new strategies to prosecute non hindu Indians. They dont sleep. Yesterday it was conversion by christians, today its love jehad conversion by muslims, tomorrow some thing. This party is against Dalits too. But Dalits come under broader classification of "Hindu", these fanatics dont come open on them, However they have a very clear agenda of alienation of dalits and promotion of caste system and elevating manu Vadis. I call upon BJP cadre to give the readers a single name of manuvadi who fought British during struggle for Independence. Its fought by muslims, christians and lower caste hindus like kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras. The upper class had a special previlige under British Raj and occupied good offices and were spying for British Raj. All of a sudden, this party founded by traitors, killers of Mahatma Gandhi, how come become a nationalist party overnight? People should educate themselves and read history. Thats why RSS doesnt believe and advocate in the education of Dalits and others. They want only one culture to be alive thats manu culture. People wake up an come to realities.

So minorities please educate your people the importance of voting or be dammed for ever and shamelessly let the saffron brigade walk over you. Congratulations Congress for the win. But the dirty politics are born by you is continued by BJP and other small parties. But at present situation in India there is no good people in any party who can really think about our country. Congress..you won just becasue there is no any other option with people. They want to cast their vote. Better from now you start doing good things leaving the dirty political culture behind by giving the minister posts to some good and clean minded young leaders. Ignore the corrupted leaders for the sake of Maharastra and India. Good luck!!

Rajesh Rao, do you know why it is? It is simply because minorities are still using their brains while voting. But you keep your brains for mortgage in BJP and RSS cupboards and then become cry babies. First learn to respect humans not on the basis of religion or skin but on the basis of relations. Defeat is defeat. Even if Raj Thackeray has divided votes, it is mainly because their family fued. And in Maharastra, I guess, minority votes are quite less than that of majority community.

So the fact is that majority of the Majority community has stood by Congress and its policies. In India so far still the Majority community is the vote bank and they are the ones who can make difference. We minorities, half of us are scattered abroad, while a few others are still in slumber. But most of the Hindus exercise their franchise judiciously and they vote.

So if a break-up is provided on what is the percentage of minority votes and majority, we will know well that major section of the majority community is tired of politics of hatred and they are now chasing love and peace. No wonder that if tomorrow BJP sheds its communal threads and fights elections of developmental basis, they will surely give Congress a run for money. What is ruining BJP is not corruption but its religious banckrupcy and relationship with RSS.

Mr Rajesh Rao/Mangalore. Please tell the readers what your so called BJP and Sangh Parivar has done to attract and include mnorities into its fold. They have been busy in finding new strategy to prosecute minorities in the name of conversion, love jehad, falsely labelling minorites as terrorists while the terror act is carried out by their own people. They believe in the policy of alienation and devide and rule policy. They dont consider Indian muslim/christian citizens as Indians.

They want to re write the history and want to rectify the historical pasts to their tune. You and your party dont believe in Indian Constitution, dont believe in equality of opportunities and social status. You hate Ambedkar and love Nathuram Godse/Jinnah. You want to destroy all masjids and churches. You want to ban beef trade. You want to promote caste system and you believe in the suppression and exploitation of dalits and shudras.

Unfortunately many shudras dont realise it. Your party's ideologies give birth to terrorism. Your policy of alienation has invited terrorism across the border, promoted internal terrorism. You believe in fake encounter killings of Muslim men and women. You want to abolish muslim personal law. When you treat minorities as second class citizens, please tell me who will vote for you. For us a known enemy (Congress)is million times better than unknown friend (BJP). You have succeeded in buying a few members of minorities into your party.

Mr Gopal Sherigar, firstly the marathi people are not stupid to fall for that trap in this modern day world. Secondly blame Bal Thackery himself and not the congress for the division within the Shiv Sena. He wanted to promote dynastic politics and so the result of that has been served to him on a platter by the electorate. This vote is for secularism 100%, but i agree that when it came to development nothing much was done by the previous congress NCP governement. The people however sacrificed development to get a secular governement, because the politics of hatred and divisiveness are more dangerous for the country. Please understand that.

Dear Mr Modi please understand that the rest of India is not divided and polarized like what you have made of Gujarat. People in the rest of the country do not live in fear like the people of Gujarat. Jai Ho congress.I hope there will be proper development in Maharastra this time unlike the performance of the last government. Please remember that the people have voted for you just to keep the fundamentalists and the extreme elements at bay, and not because of any development. In case you do not wake up this time then the people of Maharastra will be forced to look for an alternative the next time.
