Mangalore: Deccan Herald's Ronald Fernandes Bags ‘Sarojini Naidu National Award’

Mangalore: Deccan Herald Chief Reporter Ronald Fernandes Bags ‘Sarojini Naidu National Award’
Daijiworld Media Network—Mangalore (RD/CN)

Mangalore, Sep 16: Dr Ronald Anil Fernandes, principal correspondent, Deccan Herald, Mangalore, has bagged the ‘Sarojini Naidu National Award – 2009’, for his special report on women and Panchayat Raj.

The award selection committee chose Fernandes for his special report on the achievement of women in child education and health as well as in the creation of a model village in Koila gram panchayat, Puttur taluk. Saraswati, a scheduled caste neo-literate, serves as the gram panchayat president in that village.

The award is also in recognition of Fernandes’ contributions to progressive journalism throughout his career. He obtained his doctorate in journalism for his thesis on 'children as determinants of TV programmes', from Mangalore University in the year 2007.

The Sarojini Naidu Award consists of Rs 2 lac in cash and a trophy. It is the first time that a journalist from South India has been chosen for this award.

The district unit of ‘Apna Desh’ is among those who have congratulated Fernandes for partnering in pro-people activities, rural literacy campaign, cleanliness and hygiene, development of tribal community, and model rural development campaigns.

    Tue, Sep 22 2009

Since I bagged the prestigious Sarojini Naidu award 2009 five days ago, I have been flooded with phone calls and congratulatory email messages from friends, colleagues, relatives and well-wishers from India as well as those from West Asia, the US and several other countries. Many of these messages also came in response to the news story carried by popular online news portal daijiworld.com.

It is heartening that I still receive calls from many expressing their appreciation and good wishes. I humbly acknowledge the good wishes and express my heart-felt thanks to all those from the bottom of my heart. I would like to inform all of you that the credit for this award should rightfully go to Mr Sheena Shetty and Mr Krishna Moolya, the two silent social workers of Dakshina Kannada district. But for them, I would not have received this award. In fact, it was the Shetty-Moolya duo who informed me about the Koila gram panchayat (the award winning article was about the role played by Koila GP chief in developing the GP). Subsequently, it was the same duo who submitted the application for the award on my behalf. So I wish to convey my special gratitude to Mr Sheena Shetty and Mr Krishna Moolya and dedicate this award to them.

It is my wish that I reply to all of you individually, so I request you to treat this as my private acknowledgement. I sincerely thank all of you once again for those warm wishes and uplifting messages. A special thanks to daijiworld.com and my other media friends who promptly published the news about my winning the award.
