Leading crowds to violence is not leadership: Army Chief

New Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS): Taking a stand over Citizenship Amendment Act, Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat said on Thursday that instigating large crowds to turn violent and carry out arson doesn't amount to leadership.

General Rawat said at an event - Six Sigma Healthcare Delhi- that the Leadership is all about leading. "Therefore what is complex about leadership if it is all about leading? If you move forward everybody follows. It is not that simple. It appears simple, but it is a complex phenomenon."

During the event, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan was the guest of honour.

General Rawat said even among the crowd one would find a leader. "But leaders are those who lead people into the right directions," General Rawat said.

Indirectly hinting about violence and arson during agitation over the Citizenship Amendment Act across the country, General Rawat pointed out: "Leaders are not those who lead people in inappropriate directions, as we have witnessed in a large number of universities and college students... they are leading masses to carry out arson and violence in our cities and towns".

He stressed: "This is not leadership."

This is the first time General Rawat, who is to retire on December 31, made a statement over prevailing law and order situation in the country.

General Rawat is among the top contender for the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister on tri-services matters.

Sources said that government is considering appointing serving General Rawat as India's first CDS. The decision would be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rawat was commissioned into the 5th battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles on December 16, 1978.

On December 16, the Central government announced that Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane will be the next Chief of Army Staff leading the 1.3 million-strong force after General Rawat retires. Lt Gen Naravane is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army.

Gen Rawat should have remained dedicated to our Forces and apolitical. He had no business to talk political issues. He is finding it hard to contain the terrorists from across the border; why get his nose into the domestic problems. The fear that some day some General will take a political plunge -- is growing more now than before. The Government should take note of this and ask Gen Rawat to keep his mouth shut on political issues. We have a Government that could take care of national issues or political issues, including the Army.

Leaving apart all other things of CAA; why the illegal immigrants should be given Indian Nationality. Why not give them just the Permanent Residency instead of giving Nationality?

It is established practice that The Top commanding officers of our men in Uniform stay apolitical. Unfortunately, this man has chosen to express his views to please the present Government, it is clear he is now eyeing the post of The CDS. Earlier too his statement's seem out of context. We are now whether out of fear or to curry favor, turning out to be a Nation of sycophant's, each one trying to out do the other.

In very simple words, the NRC is be like :the Mother ( Our caretaker government) who abandons her children (Citizens) saying that you have to prove that you are my children; making all children accused as illegal; and putting the burden of proof on the children to prove that they are not illegal.
But, the children will surely reply to the mother that- you had accepted all of us until now as your children and if you reject us now, the burden of proof should be on you to prove that we are the children of others and not yours.

I do agree with your point of view but when comparing the casualties and rampage by police it is maximum in BJP ruled UP.

17 people have been gunned down and mostly belonging to particular community.

There should be some investigation in that regard.

National TV's are high lighting all such incidents carried out by ruthless police. Facts are facts and cameras do not capture fake incidents.

No wonder, UP also has the largest Muslim population, courtesy of koranization. With such big numbers infiltration by rowdies is inevitable.

The speciality of Anti CAA protests is that they are marked by the absence of any leaders. Common citizen is leading the protests in most of the cases. Still Rawat is saying such things. How could he say that?

Police do not belong to any political party.
Even if they belong, they will be equally divided in all political parties.
Hence, chances of they misusing is very rare.

How many lies Mr. Modi has told until now in open Public? Just recent was that his government never told about Pan India implementation of NRC . That time Mr. Rawat did not mind giving any open suggestion to Mr. Modi that a habitual lier cannot be a leader.

Modi did not say that NRC wont be implemented. He only said that PAN India NRC is not planned for now. It was shah who said. So the final decision will be through a notification. lets see wether it will pass the supreme court test.

    Rajesh,
Listen to his speech in Ramleela. He said, "ever since his government is formed in 2014, nobody from.his government has told that there will be Pan India implementation of NRC". But, Amit Shah told in many occasions that there will Pan India implementation of NRC in election rallies, parliament, news channels interviews.

If this is not lie, what is a lie?

You are trying to change the narrative itself. Modi said that until now.his government never told about Pan India implementation of NRC. Everyone knows how many time Mr. Amit Shah has told that; even in Parliament.

Mr. Amit Shah on WEDNESDAY: What Mr. Modi told is true. It is WEDNESDAY today.

Who is lying now? Mr. M or Mr. A or both M & A?

Mr. Rawat can comment for what is related to his job. For example he should have taught Mr. Modi that Radar can detect fighter jets even in Clouds. These people don't talk when they have to.

Sir, Your position being a Army Chief why you have to comment on civil matters? Our Home Ministry & Police are there to take control of the situation as and when such need arises. Leave politics to the politicians and concerned authorities.
