Mangalore, Sep 15: To mark the first anniversary of the attack on churches in Mangalore, the Mangalore diocese called all Christians to engage themselves in prayer and fasting on Monday September 14, 2009.

The Bishop of Bellary Diocese, Henry D'Souza, initiated the day's service at Kulshekar church on Monday morning and celebrated the Holy Mass.

Bishop of Mangalore, Aloysius Paul D'Souza, who celebrated mass in the Adoration Monastery at Milagres, the first place of worship to be ransacked by miscreants on Setpember 14, 2008, called upon all  the Christians to follow the path of the Bible and pray for those who persecute them.

The Bishop also participated in the service at Permannur church and later in the evening, at Kulshekar church.

Speaking during the short gathering in the church, the Bishop said that it was decided not to hold protests on this day, but to engage in prayer for those who persecuted them and for the victims of the violence.

Catholic leader Sushil Noronha, who spoke on this event, recalled a few painful moments of the attacks and said that the strength of Christians is their tolerance and their faith in God.

“The attack on our faith has brought us closer. An organized battle for justice is now being fought, for which every person must support and contribute his share however small it may be.

Later, the parishioners were given bread to break their fast.

Advocates MP Noronha, Ivan D'Souza, Mariamma Thomas and parish priest Fr Valerian Pinto were also present at the programme.

The Bishop offered special prayers for those Christians who underwent persecution and had to face testing times in prison during the last year's attack.

Fr Valerian Pinto, parish priest, Kulshekhar church, welcomed. Vote of thanks was proposed by parish council secretary, George D'Souza. Church vice-president Victor Vas presented the programme.

The anniversary commemorated with prayer and fasting, in response to the call given by the Bishop, is the right way and of course the christian response to fundamentalists. The dark clouds that gathered in the sky with thunder and lightning, a phenomenon that repeated this year too at the same time when the adoration Chapel was desecrated, gave us a sign from heaven that

Look at the crucifix how painful it is ... Hope this will not happen agian . But we have showed our fellow ctizens by not attacking temples and other worship places that we adore all religions even if we follow christianity we give same repesect ,honour, previlage of any religion for that matter . If i a christian is told that you need to spend a day in mosque temple or any religious place i would not matter because all religions teach good things .

One year passed by, miscreants are still roaming free and waiting for another opportunity!(Are they friends of Police and state govt?) Such prayer and fasting may create some kind of discomfort to them. However, people protested church attack were beaten and put into jail. Coutecy- State govt & Home Minister!! themselves and the police must be knowing atleast a dozen involved in the church attacks!!!

I think lets foreget last year's unfortunate incidents and move on with life. Time will heal the wounds. I donot see any christains taking up arms and becoming militants & terrorist like other sects of minority people, as they are educated, peace loving and good natured people. Now coming back to Tippu episode here, many in SK were converted to izzlam during Tippus rule and christians were percecuted and killed for disobeying him. So its foolish to compare last year's incidents to Tippu atrocity on chritians. It was good he was bannished by british before he could follow the Aurangzebs path of annhilation of those who did not believe in his religion.

14-9-2008 was the Black Day for the christians of Mangalore. As our Parish dedicated to Holy Cross Church, we were all was celebrating the Parish Feast on that day, when the messages of Adoration Monastry attack was received, it made me feel sad, that the unity among the comunities in Mangalore was destroyed by acts of vandalism, which I had not heard since my childhood days. I too had gathered at the church premises on 14th and 15th September 2008 and witnessed the police brutalities on people and place of worship. Indeed, I had deposed before Justice Somashekar Commission what I had seen. Our two Asst. Parish Priests, Fr. Arun and Fr. Vincy stood like two pillars at the Church main entrance door, when the police force was making headway to enter the place of worship. Our courageous priests did not allow that to happen. Police arrested people and some volunarity gave them up to the police for the sake of the rest of the community. I was witness to these brave priest action and of people who surrendered, as I was just standing next to the wwo priests, and all the faithful who gathered inside the Chuech praying. Here I was reminded of the Juesus teaching in Luke 21 :12-19 and Mark 13: 9-13.It was nothing but the acts of few who had broken the chain of peaceful atmosphere of the Communities living in Mangalore for ages. Yesterday, it was a day of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament to heal the wounds of vandalism that occured last year. It was the teaching of Jesus that had relevance yesterday''s prayer when he had forgiven from the cross who had crucified him, saying, "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do". No protests were held yesterday but only prayer for peace and forgiveness. In the coming days, let us pray for the unity among the people and peaceful atmosphere when the world is witnessing turmoil in the name of religion.

Fasting & PrayerIndeed a true christian way of responding to commemorate the one year of church attacks in Mangalore. We may not have got justice from our elected leaders, but the world at large was at our support, after the church attacks last 14th September''08. There is a need to sensitize our christian brethren to gear up for such incidents not in the form of tit for tat retaliation but in terms of gathering documents and evidences in order to assert our fundamental rights and secure justice. We all are Indians and no one has the right to deny our Constitutional rights. I appreciate the solidarity shown by our parishioners of kulshekar church to commemorate the day and also by our fellow christians from various parishes. May god bless us all.

It sad to hear that we christians still not got justice the recent church attack is proof for it. We have got christrian leaders no use for getting justice but good in contributions & collections. Also sad to hear that then CM awarded for good law & order in the state. I think India Today awarded him for attack on church in the state. Therefore all christians wake up for your rights. nobody will help us other than GOD. Wake Up ... Wake Up....

One year has passed by & we are still in a shock and wonder, as to " WHY IT HAPPENED N WHO DID IT TO US?? " Even before we could come out of last year''s shock, we were in for yet another rude shock with another similar attack in Bangalore.

We as Catholics / Christains, believe in Forgiveness, pardon & peace and harmony. But how much of it, is being appreciated and considered by our government officials and governing bodies? Have we become soft targets of present day evil thinking? Our Religious Leaders called on us to mark this day with fasting & prayers and we have done that.

We did not take processions, coz that will not help us much. What makes us anxious is, will some body ever be punished for these merciless deeds and attacks on us n our places of worship? Ironically, culprits are still wandering as free birds, as if nothing ever has happened. While few of our youngsters are still facing prosecution n trials n tribulation.

Will somebody in power listen to our plea and give us our basic rights? WE seek our basic right n freedom and liberty to practice, preach n propagate our faith, just like any other religion in our Dist, State & country at large. We are Indians too, just like anybody else is in this country. Is somebody listening to me??

Sept 14-15, 08 are one of those days which shall take years to sink in for us in Kulshekar. I still remember the day as it was our church feast and all our parishioners were in a festive mood. But the celebrations lived very short, as we saw the news in the TV Channels about the series of attacks on Churches.

Now it is around a year and at this juncture I would congratulate our Bishop for directing his people in a fitting way to commemorate this occasion by fasting and prayers. I also congratulate Fr. Vally Pinto (Vicar), Victor Vas (Vice-President), George D''Souza (Secretary) for organising the day long prayer service and the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at Cordel Church.

Bishop Henry of Bellary exposed the sacrament and in his message highlighted the life of Christ. The peculiar thing was that as the Bishop was placing the body of christ in the monstrance, suddenly there were 3 strong thunders and suddenly the sky was very dark. Bishop A. P.''s Sermon at the evening mass was very touching, where he highlighted the parallels between 14.08.08 and during the death of Jesus 2000 years back.

He said Jesus was hit brutally, kicked, and people spat at him a parallel what the Hindu fundamentalist had done last year at adoration monestary. Later Mr. Sushil, speaking on the occasion reminded the help rendered by many christian leaders like Ivan D''Souza, Mariamma Thomas, M P Noronha, Roy Castelino and others. Bishop A. P.''s golden words came from him as he said that the true spirit of christanity is tolerance, which is very difficult to achieve in a normal persons life.

He was happy that instead of taking protest march we have observed the day in fasting, prayer and spending hours with Jesus for the sake of those who have attacked the church. For me 15th Sept 08 is an unforgettable day, every time when I see the video recording of that day, how my aunty and my neighbour where being beaten mercilessly, how the nuns were targeted, how the innocents had to take shulter in the church and how they were dragged by the police... a gross violation of human rights... Thanks to the watchful media who took up this cause of violation of human rights... yet there are a few like me still suffering with false cases being framed on us....

Hats off to the parishioners who had the guts to stand up and place the facts in front of Justice Somashekara''s Commission about the atrocities they had faced. I also remember how Fr. Arun and Fr. Vincy both of them struggling with the police so that the police do not enter inside the church. A few questions which remains unanswered for me is.. Why the people who attacked the Monastery are still at large ? Why dont we name the people who attacked the monastery as terrorists? Arent they ... because they are simply destroying the peace of the nation. Why dont we think that we are all Human beings... and stop fighting on religion? ... Hoping that the bad days have passed away and M

it was a remarkable day for the christians at mangalore diocese. Highly appreciating at the words of Most. Rev.Bishop Aloysius Pual D''Souza where in decided not to have or hold on any protests on this day but to engage ourselves in prayer and fasting to pray for those who prosecute and for the victims of the voilence. we need to stand for spiritual divinity and teachings of Jeses who preached and stood for forgivness.

Humility, love, peace, forgivness will build the society to go closer to God. on the day we need recall the special persons who worked for the church that is president of catholic guild Mr. M.P.Norohna, Mr. Ivan D''Souza, Mrs. Mariamma Thomas, Parish Priest Fr.
