New Delhi, Dec 22: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed criminal intimidation charges in a supplementary charge sheet against Nirav Modi, main accused in Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam and his brother for threatening to kill one the dummy directors of the company.

CBI told a special court in Maharashtra that Ashish Mohanbhai Lad, one of the company directors received death threats if he attempted to return to India from Cairo.

Lad had fled to Cairo from Dubai to avoid arrest. However, when he decided to return in June 2018, he was contacted Nirav’s brother Nehal Modi, who threatened him on behalf of Nirav.

Nehal also called Lad subsequently and offered Rs 20 lac, asking Lad to visit Europe and give statements in Nirav’s favour before the lawyer and a judge in a European court. However, Lad refused to do the favour.

Apart from Nirav and Nehal Modi, the charge sheet also names suspended general manager at PNB Sanjay Prasad and Nirav Modi’s associates Amit Magia, Sandeep Mistri and Mihir Bhansali.

“Bhansali, Mistri and Nehal Modi are out of the country and summons should be issued against them,” the CBI said while submitting the charge sheet in the court.

Nirav Modi was declared as a fugitive economic offender early this month for evading prosecution in the Rs 13,500 crore PNB scam. He was arrested in March this year by Scotland Yard. He is currently lodged at Wadsworth prison in south-west London.
