Dubai: St Mary's Konkani Community Celebrates Nativity Feast - Pictures

Dubai, Sep 14: Dubai’s colossal Konkan Community ardently gathered on the 10th September Friday evening at 8:00 pm in St. Mary’s Church compound to celebrate Monthi Fest, a feast of nativity of Virgin Mary, a unique Mangalorean traditional feast.  St. Mary’s Konkan Community [SMKC] organized the grand celebration where an enormous crowd of 4,000+ gathered facing the beautiful altar set in front of church to venerate Mother Mary on this blessed day.

As the Holy Mass in Konkani began with the melodious singing by Konkani Choir, a grand procession commenced with Priests Fr. Basil Vaz,  Fr. Michael Cardoz, Fr. Freddy D’Souza, Altar Servers and Lay Ministers.

Rev. Fr. Basil Vaz, guest priest from Bela and the main celebrant of the festive mass narrated an impressive sermon, advising how the people should follow the virtues illustrated in Mother Mary’s life. Fr. Vaz also beautifully described that a good and humble person always remain down-to-earth just like a paddy shoot filled with good grains where as a shoot with empty paddy corns remains straight like a wicked and head strong person.

St. Mary’s Konkani Choir members under the superb direction of Jossy Moras and melodious music by Ketan D’Souza rendered beautiful Hymns throughout the mass and was greatly appreciated by all the attendees.

Once the mass concluded, as per the traditional practice in Mangalore,  Fr. Freddy,  Spiritual Director of SMKC honoured the generous donors who assisted to organize this event,  with the distribution of candles.  Then it was the time for the children to show their appreciation to Mother Mary.  The vibrant and young children with their flower baskets venerated Mother Mary to the accompaniment of hymns ‘Sokkad Sangatha Melyan” and “Moriyek Hogolsiyan”.

Traditional fellowship ‘Novem Jevan’ was arranged through Dubai’s famous restaurant Jacky Star Restaurant,  Guisais.  Scrumptious Vegetarian meal and vorn was served to the huge crowd of 2000+.

Eventhough it was one of the peak humid evening of the summer season, the huge congregation of St. Mary’s church braved the heat and assembled in great number to illustrate their devotion to Mother Mary. Volunteers of St. Mary’s Volunteers Sodality under the leadership of Rony D’Cunha,  SMKC members and JMJ Prayer Group members ensured the discipline throughout the celebration and worked side by side to make necessary arrangements for the entire evening.

Mr.Richie, its true that sunitha menezes is not capable enough to advice you because you donot understand the basic difference between buying and getting.Looking at her comment one can clearly understand that she was talking about the tradition of giving sweets to the children those who bring the flowers and you are talking about buying the sweets. cmmon Every parent can afford to buy sweets to their children and I don''t think any one needs to suggest this point. But there is a big difference between buying and getting.I am sure the sponsor had given enough peices of cakes then why they were not distributed to the children??Even I have the same complaint with the organizers. May be this is a small issue for you but that doesn''t mean that it''s a small issue for the one who raised it. I really appreciate SMKC s efforts towards the whole programme, Choir was wonderful and sermon was great. Im sure smkc will take these comments in a positive manner

Stop criticizing the weather, food, seating arrangements, noisy children etc on such a joyful occasion. You are there for the love of your heavenly mother. Moreover you are in a alien country. Thank god you get a chance to celebrate on such occasions.

Worshiping Mother Mary with flowers could have been arranged in Volley Ball Compound with entry for children and mothers with small babys, after the mass, I have even I more Humble request to the parish Priest to stop Food serving Function after any celebration in the church , Taking into the facts of food poisoning, and other health issue, God forbid if there is any issue Media will higlight name of St Marys Churuch Dubai, God Bless and Happy feast to all

First of all, I think those who were not present for the function, should refrain from commenting on the celebration based on other people''s comments. The celebration on the whole was excellent with a beautiful alter, mind blowing sermon from Rev. Fr. Basil Vaz, fantastic choir, most dedicated volunteers and most of all wonderful congregation.

Before commenting on not having mass in the main church, I think it would be better for people to analyse and find out the reason for it rather than arriving at a criticizing conclusion. If we think of the labourers toiling in the heat for almost 12 hours a day, I think bearing the humidity for 2 hours for the sake of our dear Mother Mary once a year should be acceptable. Wonderful tradional food from Jacky''s Star. Hat''s off to SMKC members and all those who have contributed in conducting such a beautiful celebration in a smooth and peaceful manner.

I dont think Sunitha Menezes, you are capable enough to advise me to do the job, I am sure I have been here long enough to know what is what, I too have small kids, I was a witness when children were running around, and the open air mass was announced atleast a month ago, we could have raised our voice then? and I am sure knowing the weather SMKC must have had a reason to it outside, and shouting for every small thing as if all were born in a AC room was also little bit over the board, to orgainse a small function is hard, and its not a reality show, every one should pitch in to do their bit and do some volunteer work to organise events like this,

These volunteers are not paid workers, with their prior engagements etc, they do some social service for the community, to keep up the tradition, and its not proper on us to crictize every little bit like sweets etc, which are too small an issue, I am sure every one is capable of providing sweets to their children, try to make it a point to carry some sweets as an emergency if in future it is not provided but to make a issue out of nothing is not fair.

Everyone has a right to raise their opinion, at the same time he/she should know the situation, and then if need should approach the concerned officials and raise your grievances so that they can improve on the mistakes, as we all agree SMKC has provided us with excellents events all along for which we all should be gratefull, anyway happy Feast to all.

I agree with you Treza, 2 to 3 of the volunteers were very rude. Volunteer Sodality leaders should identify those and train them properly to deal with people. Why to ruin the good deeds of other volunteers only because of these few? Overall it was a good celebration. Only the bad weather spoiled the good show. Keep it up SMKC.

Great arrangement for such a big crowd! Even held inside the church it was not possible to accommodate half of the people. Impressed to see the organizers working in the hot noon and evening to make the stage and decorate the altar. Industrial fans and more chairs would have helped. Novem Jevaann was very good just like in India. Thanks to all.

It is one of the worst experience i had on Friday mass.I had a surgery last month, could not stand for long time..So, there were few chairs empty and I sat one of the chair in 4th raw. After 10 minutes a volunteer came and asked me to get up and go back (i was in the middle raw) and have no idea these chairs were reserved for priveledged people as there were no sign board and i said why ??? to my surprise these are reserved for the sponsors ??? It is so pathetic and embarrassed situation to get up and stand back....standing in the hot and humid weather is OK for us and i have been standing and listening mass almost all the masses in Dubai church as it is crowded. I have been attending mass in St Marys for almost 2 decades and most of the Konkan Community knows me.....wake up guys church is not for sponsors ...if they told me it is reserved for children or old sick people i would have appreciated ..i asked him how much i have to pay to sit here....he went back...again two/three volunteer screeming at me to get up.. Pls request all volunteers learn to respect others in Holy place.

It was amazing to see such a huge crowd for the celebration even in that heat. My family was too tired but that festive and devotional atmosphere made us tolerant. Just a request, try to make better arrangement to sit for mothers with children. Happy feast to the organizers and all the volunteers.

It is indeed true that we braved the extreme weather and tolerated discomfort during the nativity celebration for the love of our Mother Mary. She will definitely bless us. Overall arrangement was great, except seating. Can SMKC make better seating arrangement for all if it happens next time please? All the best.

Children were let loose by the parents, I do agree with Richie on this, and nothing wrong in commenting, but just making mole out of mountains is not good, we are good in crictizing, traditions are taken care or else this function would not have taken place, but every tradition can''t be done when we are outside, and sweets was not at all a priortity, you can give your suggestions to SMKC, rather shouting at everything, all are here as volunteers no one is a paid member we should remember that together we should organize and the good and the bad should be treated with a stride

Hey Richie,  giving sweets to children is a tradition of this festival, nobody told volunteers to take care of our children, we know how to take care of them, and also we know caesers is open over there, like that we can also say why to come to the church sit at home and pray to mother mary, infact there was an volunteer who was allowing his relatives and friends near the altar but others he was opposing, if you dont know anything dont know give judgement on others comments, you enjoyed the mass just mention that and do your job.

Richi, Udupi/Dubai, Please don''t say truemangalorean colours. evryone knows that we Mangaloreans do adjust with anything and thats why the Mass was kept out side the church. Why it was not possible to the organizers to shift the Arabic mass to other location and arrange our mass in side the church, where at least Baby room is there and atleast ladies can take rest. Everybody know to take care of their children and no one wants volunteer to take care of their child, but to take care of a small child in a hot humid day for 2 hrs is not a easy thing.I think u don''t have small kids or you never experienced such situations and thats why u r commenting like this.About giving sweets to kids who bring flowers to mother Mary, its a tradition since long time we are following. We all apreciate SMKC s efforts but we have every right to comment to improve their work in future.

Wow, true mangalorean colours, full of comments, a crowd of 5000 to handle is not a joke, I have been to many many functions in St. Mary''s over the years, some expect even the children to be BABYSIT by the volunteers, if they take care of their own children, it will make everyone''s life easy, leaving children around so that they can attend mass and the rest can feel uneasy has been the tradition, and now we are complaining, after the function, some wanted sweets and cakes come on guys we are doing it for mother mary not for sweets, the Ceaser''s was open we could have done it ourselves, lets stop complaining and join with with the dedicated volunteers and make much better, as SMKC is known for it outstanding organising skills. Thank you SMKC for this grand occasion

I agree with all the readers who have expressed their concern about the celbration of Monti Fest in Dubai Church. It wasn''t appropriate to hold the open air mass during this hot and humid weather. Secondly I could see ladies with little children struggling among the crowd. The seating arrangement is a must atleast for 50% of the crowd. Although I could not enjoy the mass the most beautiful thing I liked was the singing. Choir was one of the best things I enjoyed. Special thing about this choir was the way singers were responing to the conductor. sometimes loud and sometimes soft... I simply enjoyed it. Some of the male solo parts were sounding like professional singers. Three cheers to the choir.

There was an announcement of the distribution of cake, but we could not see anyone, its fine if all of us dont get the cake, but something for the kids who bought flowers, organisers hope next year we will not face these types of problems. I really feel that the mass was really not well organised. First of all the climate being so humid the mass was celebrated outside which was a very bad decision without having proper seating arrangments and secondly the mothers, babies and the old suffered the most as there was no chairs to sit. I would really appreciate if you  will take better steps in  future and provide atleast chairs for the old or make arrangements in the main hall next year.

Really discomforting idea to all, Specially the Old and small children, the weather was really not suitable to celebrate the mass outside the Church, Everybody wants to celebrate the mass gracefully, it was really horrible, Everyone were just pouring. Overall it was a good Mass, with a good sermon and the volunteers, Choir & SMKC did a good job. But next time they should make it a point to keep this inside the Church, and give first preference to Old people, parents with babies, and little children and rest can be adjusted in the Main hall & Mini hall. Also do some arrangements by keeping some more fans if people standing outside the Church. May God Bless you all Thank you
