Mangalore, Sep 11: A group of citizens took out a march from Kankanady to Nandigudda Circle on Friday September 11 with the slogan ‘Love Environment with Development’ in support of the Mangalore City Corporation’s (MCC) plan to widen and concrete the road and handed over a memorandum to mayor Shankar Bhat who joined them.

The march started from Fr Muller Hospital and ended near Nandigudda Circle. The marchers demanded that the road work should continue as development was essential along with the need to save trees. The march was led by Yathiraj Shetty, businessman, and one of the directors of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) handed over the memorandum to the mayor.

Bhat joined the march and said that the city corporation is concerned about saving trees and the environment. “But development is the need of the hour as the city is growing in all ways. So, road is taken as a basic necessity for development”, he said adding that the work will continue.

The memorandum demanded that the widening and concrete work should be completed immediately after cutting the trees. It also suggested that the MCC plant trees somewhere else to compensate.

Kiran Shetty, one of the businessmen, said that road development is important. “The congested road causes so many problems whereas a widened road is a sign of development. Environmental knowledge is a must with development and we support the plan of the MCC”, he said.

Residents of Valencia and Marnamikatta area Vivian, Praveen, Melvin D’Souza, and others were present at the march.

It can be recalled that another group had opposed the felling of trees in the name of development and opposed the road plan which would bring down 43 trees on both sides of this road.

City Mayor Irked by Self-styled Environmentalists - Warns of Police Cases

“We will file police cases against the members of some organizations, if they indulge in damaging or destroying the property of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), in the guise of holding protest against the felling of roadside trees,” warned Mayor Shankar Bhat here at a press meet held here on Thursday September 10.
“Some of the organizations and a section of the media are involved with mud-slinging at the Mangalore City Corporation and blowing things out of proportions, in the matter of cutting down the trees standing on the Kankanady -Morgansgate Road, which is planned to be concreted. It is not proper on the part of the concerned, to take the law in to their hands. Hence, we will lodge cases against the guilty,”  he said.

Bhat explained that the road is planned to be widened to seven meters on both sides. Cutting down of trees is not involved with the widening of this road. So, no one need to be worried about the trees till this project is completed.  “I cannot foretell what will happen in the future,” he added.

The protestors had removed the median markings on the road, that had been put for concreting purposes, while demanding for the preparation of a new plan to save trees. The mayor said that this act tantamount to taking law into their hands and damaging the MCC property.

Turning his ire the forest department too, Bhat said that the department officials have issued a statement to the media that 206 trees had been cut during this year. But there is no way of saving a tree if it is located on the path of the road taken up for widening. MCC has given eight lac rupees to the forest department to plant trees at the ratio of five saplings per each tree so felled. The amount also includes the maintenance of the saplings, he stated, adding, “we will seek a report from the forest department on this issue’.

Deputy mayor Rajani Dugganna and commissioner Vijayaprakash were also present at the press meet.

The way this rally is organised, I can only realise the vested interests of the parties and the so called businessmen behind this campaign. These people will see only their benefits by cutting the trees and not the welfare of all. While the save trees campaign was very peaceful, this campaign had all sorts of noises. They are not interested in loving the environement but only only their benefits from this.

I would like to point out over here that it is very much necessary to develop the road at Attavar. Most of the road there is so narrow and it is a two way traffic. It is just enough for a 3 wheeler to pass by up and down and in the middle of it when a big bus like No. 27 goes, then God help it! There is a traffic jam and the road is also not in good shape. Whenever I pass that way by bus, I feel so sorry to look at this as to why the roads are not widened. To add to this, there is a KMC hospital there. Then isn''t it necessary for MCC to look into this state of affair and see ways and means to widen the attavar road and then decide to beautify Kankanady-Morgan gate road which is so wide and there is no traffic jam.

A city like Goa where the flow of tourist is tremendous throughout the year, one could see a lot of greenery and those Municipalities or Corporations have not cut trees and concretized in the guise of development of the city. So, what is the necessity in Mangalore to widen the roads where the roads have already been concretised? Instead the Mangalore City Corporation should open its eyes where there are hundreds and thousands of pot holes on Kadri/Mallikatta to Bunts Hostel Road where the City Corporation is closing its eyes and playing hide and seek and not even providing the basic infrastructure or filling up the holes or repairing it? Are you listening Mr. Mayor?

Two points, can anyone please explain why a concrete has to be laid when a concrete road already exists from Fr Muller Hospital to the park at Valencia, this concrete road was laid a few years ago and was in good condition, but now this concrete road is being dug up. and second why are the trees in Karangalpady in front of the market not being uprooted, when any sane person can see that they are a bigger bottleneck compared to any other tree in Mangalore, and people might recollect that a few years ago a young woman lost her life when in a collision with a vehicle she was thrown at the parapet of the trees in Karangalpady, these trees are more of a nuisance then any other traffic impediment in Mangalore, let the Mayor cut these trees first

There should alround development and not development only at places where our ancestors have left sufficient space for two lane road and also planted trees. Now coming to Car street, bunder and attavar we cannot see roads. The lanes are called roads and the mayor is not worried about widening those places because these places are BJP strongholds.

Then can we call the enthusiasm of mayor to broaden kankanady-nandigudda road as truthful. Please utilise the funds properly. Please utilise the scarce funds to broaden car street, bunder and attavar (KMC chakrapani temple) so that there will be real development. Do not develop roads which are more developed compared to car street and bunder areas. Let these pockets be developed before venturing into valencia. Let us be truthful as we live in the land of Mahatma. Let us politicise each and everything. We should remember that we all live on oxygen to breathe and trees are more important than old buildings in car street and bunder. Jai karnataka

We appreciate MCC''s intiative of concretaization of roads in Mangalore, but should apply same yard stick for every citizen. EArlier in Karangalpady when the objection arrised for cutting the tree , MCC is diverting the road, removing existing parking in front of the vegetable market.MCC couldn''t remove one tree which is in center of the road. What answer Mayor have for this?

Their demand that " cut these trees and plant new trees somewhere else" is amusing. No sane person will ask that. Regarding the comments about " self styled enviornmentalists" what does it mean . Is ther any university that grants a degree makes one professional enviornmentalist? The Envirnmentlist have to be self-styled only .

Mahatma Gandhi was a self styled Satyagrahi - we should remember. People having social concern versus business concern seems to be the issue now.Baba Amte , Sunderlal Bahuguna all were " self styled " social workers. Does any body needs a certificate to be an enviornmentalist?? If so where the certificate is available ??

Mr Yathiraj I think it is better you take care of your business rather than think of the environment and develpoment. We can see with our own eyes what development has done to the natural beauty of Mangalore. It has spoilt the beauty of Mangalore. It is really sad to see that people are not at all concerned for the environment. Hats of to the people who really are concerned for the environment.

It is the primary duty of the MCC to protect the environment. In the name of development no body has the right to exploit or to spoil the natural habitant. I really appreciate and extend my whole hearted support to the environment friends citizens. Mayor is not the sole person to decide the development of mangalore. Let him and his party take the confidence of all councilors of the city then only he can warn the citizens of police action if that is a unanimous decision of the MCC.

The Issue seems to have taken a political turn. The trees will be the victims. If the mayor stops people from parking at the sides of the road and provides parking spaces at junctions it will not be necessary to cut down trees. If you notice, in every road half of the space is taken by parked vehicles. Even in mumbai in localities such as bandra you see plenty of trees alongside the road.

I have read this article very carefully because I am concerned about the money that has been given by the MCC to the Forest Dept to plant 5 x 206 saplings and to look after them to make up for the felled trees. 775 Rs per sapling to plant them and to maintain them- boy oh boy these must be the most expensive saplings in the city.

Pray where are they I demand that for this amount each sapling should have a meshed guard each sapling shd have a number given by the MCC/Forest Dept on the guard and even a small tag giving the details of the type of sapling planted. I purchased 5 saplings from a Nursery in town at Rs 85 to 225 eachfitted around them meshed guards that cost me an average of Rs 185/- each and watering them with 5 buckets of grey water they have now grown into 7/8 ft in height trees. MCC has compost( I hope so after so much has been spent on the compost plant) so free manure is avilable to them if they ask( or even demand) that the people staying by way of the planted sapling "adopt" them, I am sure nobody will object to it. But if the MCC/ Forest Dept has pocketed the money ( or even part of it) those persons should be suspended/ sent to Forest postings as a punishment. Mr Bhat can we have an official letter posted on this site where the Forest Dept have planted the 1000 odd saplings at Rs 775 per sapling duly confirmed by your officer who should have overseen such plantings.

ONLY THEN WE WILL BELIEVE YOU. By the way, you plan the road widening/ concretisation 2 years in advance cannot you plant the saplings at that time itself so that we the people can see for ourselves that replacement trees are coming up. And I hope and pray that the Forest Dept have/are going to plant tap root saplings and not the spreading just below the surface spreading root trees. I couls name you 6/7 of the former should you send me an email.
