`Protection of all Minorities is my Primary Concern,’  says Governor

by Gabriel Vaz
Daijiworld Media Network

Bangalore, Sep 11:   Karnataka’s new Governor, H R Bharadhwaj, who had reassured all minority communities, especially Christians and Muslims, in the state of taking all steps to safeguard their interests soon after taking charge of Raj Bhavan, reiterated his commitment on Friday and made it clear that ``protection of all minorities is my primary concern.’’

The Governor, who had told the Archbishop of Bangalore Rev Dr Bernard Moras during their first meeting after assuming charge that he was ``ready to walk barefoot, if necessary’’ to ensure full protection to minorities and had promised to ``do everything possible’’ to ensure that the minorities and their places of worship were unharmed, discarded protocol and personally drove down to the St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary at Malleshwaram in Bangalore to meet the Archbishop of Bangalore and all the other 10 Catholic Bishops of different dioceses in the state participating in the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC).

The Governor’s private meeting with all the 11 Catholic Bishops representing the KRCBC lasting almost an hour assumes importance in the backdrop of the attack and vandalism on the Francis De Sales Church at Hebbagodi in Anekal taluk of Bangalore rural district, about 20 kms from the heart of the city, in the wee hours of Thursday morning.  The miscreants had damaged the statues of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary in the grotto in the church premises and had also smashed the glass window panes of the church.

`I have already discussed the incident with the Home Minister Dr V S Acharya and asked for a detailed report,’’ the Governor said indicating that he had also spoken to the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and requested him to personally meet him (Governor) after the conclusion of the ongoing session of the state legislature.

When a Bishop brought to the notice of the Governor the unease and hurt feelings of the Christian community at the Home Minister’s statement dismissing the incident as a ``minor’’ attack and for blaming the media for blowing the incident out of proportion, the Governor shared the concern and felt it was ``highly improper and unwarranted.’’

`It is not correct to treat incidents affecting the sentiments of people belonging to any religion merely because of the absence of loss of lives or serious damages to property. These kind of statements enrage the people and provoke needless trouble,’’ he said.

The incident, which came to light on Thursday morning when the parish priest Fr Aloysius saw the broken pieces of the statues of Jesus and Mary, had provoked widespread condemnation. The Congress and JD(S) opposition leaders had demanded a high-level inquiry by the Corps of Detectives  (COD) and immediate arrest of all culprits.

Unlike the series of attacks against Churches and different places of worship belonging to Catholics in Mangalore, Bangalore and other districts in September last year, when the Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and the Home Minister Dr V S Acharya had not bothered to immediately react to the incidents, the chief minister promptly announced a COD probe into the latest attack against the Hebbagodi church on Thursday.

Recalling his long association with the Catholic church and Christian institutions, Bharadhwaj said many of his neighbours were Christians. ``I have been associated with various church related activities. My wife and daughter also have a long affiliation with Christian institutions,’’ he said jocularly observing: ``You can consider me as half Christian.’’

`I have been intimately associated with the activities of the Church. I am an admirer of the multi-faceted activities and contribution of the Christians,’’ he said.

While pointing out that his role was very limited, the Governor said he would do his best to ensure that the safety and security of all sections of society, especially minorities, was protected.  ``We are not doing any favour to minorities by promising to ensure protection and safety of minorities as it is a constitutional duty. Secularism must be followed in its true spirit,’’ he said promising to keep the Centre informed about the developments.

The Governor made a special reference to last year’s series of attacks against Churches in Mangalore, Udupi, Bangalore and other districts. ``I propose to visit all districts, especially the coastal districts. I will stay in Mangalore and Udupi districts for a couple of days for a personal assessment of the situation and to  reassure the people,’’ he added.

This governer is neither interested in welfare of Karnataka nor believes in secularism. He is interested in appeasing christians so that Italina lady smile on him and rehabilitate him at centre. This governers job is like that of a glorifed clerk. Governer should know that India is secular county and appeasing minority and setting them against Majority would boomerang on him and as well as on minority community.

Most of us know the present Governor of Karnataka as the former Law Minister of the UPA government. That a person of his stature and eminence has reassured the minorities and especially the christian community that he will do his best to set things right, is in itself a feeling of hope and satisfaction. Your Excellency Mr.H.R. Bharadhwaj we place our trust in you and sincerely hope that you will exercise your powers to see that peace and harmony will eventually prevail. God bless you.

At a time when attacks on Churches and on minorities are going on unabated, it is gratifying to see The present Governor of Karnataka Sr. Bharadhwaj taking active interest to ensure that the constitutional rights of the people are protected and safeguarded. India needs straightforward people like Bharadhwaj who do not believe in empty promises but action. It is good to know that he has already visited The place of worship in Malleswaram and has not lost time in calling a meeting of the hierarchy of The Catholic Church.

What is more is that he has assured that he will not only look into the recent attack on The Church in Bangalore but also visit Mangalore and Udupi and make an in depth study of the incidences of attacks on Churches in these places. I am constrained to observe that Archbishop Moras has again taken the lead role to put forward the grievances of The Catholics before The Governor. Not long ago he put up a bold front before

The Chief Minister of Karnataka and vehemently stressed the fact that he has hurt the feelings of the Catholic community. His exact words words were ''YOU HAVE HURT OUR FEELINGS''. Archbishop Moras - Thank you for leading the flock and fighting for your flock. You have the support and admiration of the people in Karnataka and particularly of the people in Mangalore - the place of your birth. Kudos to you. May you continue to fight for our cause.

Government should protect everybody whether minority or majority,it is our classification otherwise we are all citizen of one Nation. Majorities too face some discrimination, their places of worship too desecrated and vandalized or insulted by speech, but it is not correct. No one except atheist is non believer or kafir. Hindus too have their own belief and God has rewarded them for their deeds.

Do Mahatma Gandhi gone to heaven? No according to Islam and Christianity, because only through Allah and Mohammad or though Almighty Father and Jesus heaven is possible. Precisely for such teachings others are offended. Hence interfaith tolerance and understanding is required. I request all stop blaming others put your house in order. Let the Govt. punish culprits without siding with any religion.

This governor was the law minister in the previous UPA Govt. A sting operation was carried out on him, by people who supported the Govt for money and hence he has been shunted out to Karnataka. That is about our honorable Governor. Now coming to the point here, I think the people here are missing many instances where majority places of worship were attacked. You forgot the desecration of Shiva statue near Pandeshwar, instance of cow head being recovered from Sharavu temple etc. These two instances were the reported ones in the local media. Apart from this there were many unreported instances. No shoot at sight orders were issued when such instances happened like it has been done with the church attack incident. India belongs to the citizens of this country and not only to the minorities. I think we should remember that. And even after being nearly 30% of the population of this state, if you still want minority status, God help India.

Are their places of worships attacked and vandalised by the minorities. You are on a false propaganda and you are fan and member of saffron brigade and RSS. No minority community wants any confrontation/conflict with major community as they need peaceful living. India belongs to Indian muslim and christians as much it belongs to you Hindus .

I really appreciate the Governer''s concern over miniorities. But it is a surprise to read the statement of Home Minister, who said theat the incident is a "minior". He should remember that "The s of water makes a river" or a man steals one small item on the first day and everybody say it is minor and leave it without advising him not to steal which leads him to become a big thief after some period. If the present Government would have taken strict necessary action during the last year''s attack, such attack on thursday would not have happened.

such proactive steps by a constitutional head in reminding the other constitutional authorities to fulfill their responsibilities towards all citizens especially the minorities would help in restoring the shattered confidence of Christians. The courts could also suo moto take up such cases based on media reports so that our constitutional authorities do not waver in discharging their constitutional resposibilities and obligations towards all the citizens. Appointing commissions of inquiry/COD inquiry that finally die a natural death in the petty politics is no solution.Fast track courts should be establised to deal with such cases and the guilty be meted out examipilary punishment. The media are the best watch dogs and should expose the high and the mighty that are hell bent on dividing our society and our nation for petty electrol and other gains.Long live Karnataka the once peaceful, harmonius and progressive state and beware of the demons who are out to destroy this finely woven social fabric of our ancestors and are hell bent on destroying the unity of our future generations.

Christians must be protected. The new Governor of Karnataka Mr. H R Bharadhwaj reassured all minority communities in Karnataka to take steps to safeguard their interests and security. Deeds are decisive and not words. Everything must be done to protect Christians in Karnataka and enable them to go to church, to pray and worship without fear. Christians have done so much positively for the poor in India. They are a blessing for the society. Best Kurt

What you said is absolutely correct Mr Shridhar Achar. Iknow for a fact that the Governor had taken strong exception to the Law Minister''s letter and took strong objection when Home Minister Dr V S Acharya met him after the Hebbagodi church attack. I have heard on good authority that Dr Acharya profusely apologised for this lapse on the part of his colleague. After all, the Governor is the head of state and technically has the power to dismiss a minister!

What irks me is HM playing Dravid whenever some scroundrel attacks our worship place. He utters Minor Incident, for him it is minor but for me it is outrage. Last year too both CM and HM played Dravid, blaming the victims it self as CONVERSIONALIST. However CM was prompt this time immidiately ordering COD enquiry and offering Police Protection to the vulnerable worship places. Regarding Governor playing God Father act, was neccesiated by the ruling CM, as he was busy defending the arsonist last year.

The Government of Karnataka is trying to create fear in the minds of the Christians so that the fundamentalists in the majority community are kept in good spirits. Moreover, they know very well that Christians are not retaliating. Christians have no confidence in the BJP Govt.
