New Delhi, Dec 13: Earlier in the week, opposition in Lok Sabha raised questions against the printing of the 'lotus' symbol on the new passports. Clarifying their stand, the government on Thursday stated that it was necessary to identify fake passports. They also claimed that other national symbols will be used 'on rotation' basis for the same purpose.
Responding over the issue, MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "This symbol is our national flower and is part of the enhanced security features to identify fake passports. These security features are introduced as part of the (ICAO) guidelines."
"Apart from the lotus, other national symbols will be used on rotation. Right now it is lotus and then next month there will be some other symbol. These are those symbols which are connected with India. They could be a national flower or the national anthem," he added.
On Wednesday, M K Raghavan of Congress had slammed the government for printing lotus on new passports in Kozhikode, Kerala during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha. Raghavan claimed this was BJP's way of 'saffronisation' as the lotus is the party's election symbol.
